Bio: One of the founders of Oregon, Ralph Towner is one of the few modern jazz musicians to specialize on acoustic guitar.
In the latter group, Towner first met up with Collin Walcott, Glen Moore, and Paul McCandless, and in 1971 they broke away to form Oregon, a highly versatile group that ranges from jazz and free improvisations to folk music.
Towner (who guested with Weather Report in 1971 and played with Gary Burton a bit during 1974-1975) has performed and recorded with Oregon extensively since its formation, in addition to recording as a leader and with many other artists on the ECM label.

It is clear to me Mr Towner spent a long time composing these great works as you will note there was a significant period of time between this release and the one prior.
Thank you Mr Towner for such an intense piece of beauty and artistry, may you always be remembered for your creativity, originality, and emotional offerings.
This is a solid set of some of Ralph's most melodic compositions, performed beautifully on the classical guitar, followed by a small, interesting set of more improvisatory pieces performed on 12-string.

Ralph Towner, acoustic guitar - Time Line - ECM
Towner recorded without the usual headphones, and he reports that projecting the music into the very large space he was conscious of the natural reverberation of the church and worked with that as part of the total sound.
Towner describes the CD as "really about my path with the guitar, aspects of this long journey that is still developing - looking backwards and forwards." To illustrate that theme the CD photography both on the jewel box and the note booklet is semi-blurred shots of a landscape seen from a moving train or car.
There are five very short improvisations, selected from many more that Towner played during the recording sessions with a view toward "changing the density of the record." This is a most satisfying album; a recital which would probably appeal to classical guitar fans as much as to jazz fans.

Time Line - Ralph Towner, Music Downloads - Online
Towner's a restless artist, he pushes his boundaries on the classical and 12-string guitars.
Evans has been forever associated with the former tune since his 1961 trio performance of it at the Village Vanguard; the latter is a tune he played live fairly often in the '60s and even the '70s.
In sum, this is a brief but utterly captivating issue from one of the music's great composers and theorists that should not be missed by anyone interested in Towner, of course, but also in melodic improvisation and composition.

 Guitar Player - Ralph Towner
Ralph Towner began playing classical guitar after being persuaded to buy one by an enterprising music store salesman in the early ’60s.
Towner relocated to New York in 1968, at a time when the Big Apple’s vibrant jazz scene was transitioning away from bebop, and towards new forms that incorporated elements from musical traditions around the globe, as well as modern classical harmonies.
Towner’s latest CD, Time Line [ECM], is a collection of 16 solo guitar pieces recorded within the serene confines of Propstei St. Gerold, a monastery located high in the Austrian mountains, and listening to it one might imagine that the place’s spiritual atmosphere entered the music along with its acoustics.

Ralph Towner is in fine form on this set of five tracks, the first of which, "Distant Hills," is an Oregon standard from the band's Vanguard period.
The playing here by Towner and a group of other ECM artists is what made the label so noteworthy: It is full of elegance and aplomb and the musicians are as aware of space as they are of what fills it.
Towner, at least at this point in his career, and again much later, was a master of understatement.

Ralph Towner is a guitarist's guitarist, and a whole generation of finger-pickers have absorbed his merging of classical technique, jazz voicings, and genre-defying improvisation.
Towner's playing style is more about touch and tone than the number of notes per minute he can coax out of his instrument.
Ralph Towner can be a difficult artist to approach - often introverted, highly improvisational and complex - and solo guitar collections are somewhat of a specialty area in any case, so this album is perhaps not for everybody.

Towner kicks it into classical gear on "Les Douzilles," before moving into a hot improv duet with Gary Peacock, who -- believe it -- plays his bass like a guitarist.
The fretwork by Towner and the pizzicato by Peacock are among the most intricate, complex, and purely "musical" duets in recent history between the two instruments.
This is where Towner shines, when challenged by a musician equal to, or greater than, his own abilities.

Ralph Towner recently turned 60, and his age has only made him more eloquent, more imaginative, more able to cast a spell.
The improvisational energy and highly involved counterpoint that Towner brings to all his pieces is cut from an entirely different cloth.
Moreover, Towner's restless straddling of genres speaks to a depth of musical knowledge that purveyors of “mood music” rarely possess, if ever.

Perfect Sound Forever: Ralph Towner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Towner developed a breathy ostinato much ignored by fellow string pluckers but a suspension nonetheless lending an ambiance unobtainable with any other instrument, It was complex (fingerpicked in such instances) while muted and cloudy, a cluster later slowed down to reveal its elements before being inserted back into the song.
Ralph further chose what has since been covered by others and may eventually become a standard, the classic "Timeless," a John Abercrombie tune from an album of the same name two years earlier.
Towner had competition in Walcott this time around: the percussionist's sitar playing had improved dramatically, best shown doubled with Moore on "Rejoicing." The LP was also the group's moodiest outing in years.

Ralph Towner is globally renowned as a classical and 12-string guitar virtuoso, but he would rather be known as an aural novelist.
The album is Towner’s fifth solo-guitar release in a vast catalog of more than 20 titles stretching across nearly four decades on the ECM label.
In addition to his voluminous solo output, Towner is the principal composer, guitarist, and keyboardist for Oregon, a pioneering, boundary-breaking act known for merging world music, jazz, and classical elements.

As a solo artist, Towner, 61, is equally prolific.
But despite Towner’s resounding mastery of classical and 12 string guitar, only four of his albums for ECM are entirely solo guitar, including 1997’s Ana and his most recent recording Anthem.
Whether solo or in collaboration, Towner’s music usually finds him pursuing a balance between his compositional and improvisational tendencies.

Amid the tributes and celebrations of varying generations that fill the JVC Jazz Festival, guitarist Ralph Towner is undoubtedly responsible for the quietest moments of the 12-day fest.
Towner's intonation was impeccable at Zankel, his 12-string work remarkably confined to single, evocative notes rather than the usual strum-and-sustain technique of most players.
Towner is a guitarist who never swings, even when he interprets a number like "Come Rain." It's his commingling of elements that makes his distinct music unquestionably jazz.

Jazzmatazz Review - Oregon & Ralph Towner CDs
Towner masterfully manipulates the dynamics of his playing to create both drama and emotion in his music.
While his interest in both classical and folk music is obvious in his formidable technique and dancing melodies, it is often difficult to say exactly where his composing ends and his improvisations begin or to untangle his overlapping melodies.
Towner creates an intricate and compelling universe of sound that carries the listener along with an easy but irresistible momentum.

The warmth of Towner's compositional, sonic and melodic conception made immediate impact on If and Always By Your Side, the lyricism of these contrasting with the darting virtuosity on Oleander Etude.
Towner and Muthspiel attacked the timeless Nardis, the former on classical guitar and at his most percussive, piling up the drama.
The trio performed Towner's signature Icarus, the younger players sharing the melody over shimmering 12-string, and the composer contributing riveting, flamenco-like flourishes in the improvising.
