Ralph Plaisted - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ralph Plaisted made the first confirmed trek to the Geographic North Pole over the sea ice in 1968.
Starting his trek from Nunchuk Bay, northern Greenland, on March 7, 1968, in minus 60 degree weather, Plaisted's expedition, using snowmobiles as the primary means of transportation, arrived exactly at the North Pole in a total elapsed time of 43 days, 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Given the doubts surrounding the North pole conquest claims of Robert Peary and Frederick Cook, Ralph Plaisted's April 19, 1968 record is now part of history as the first fully confirmed successful surface conquest of the North Pole.

In one such expedition, American Ralph Plaisted traveled to the North Pole in 1968: an outstanding moment in the conquest of the Arctic.
Before departure three simple modifications were made to the vehicles: the addition of a gas reservoir on the hood, the shortening of the seat for more storage space, and the insertion of metal studs in the rubber track to increase traction on ice.
During the Plaisted expedition, Ski-Doo* snowmobiles had to cross breaks in the ice up to 3 m (10 ft.) wide, and ice ridges reaching as much as 12 m (40 ft.) high.

Other than Peary’s own description we cannot know what ice conditions were at the time, but we do know that Steger reported a smoothing of the ice and the presence of a frozen north-south lead that provided an improved surface for sledge travel in the near vicinity of the Pole.
Ralph Plaisted’s colleague, Col. Gerry Pitzl, navigator on their successful snowmobile assault in 1968, similarly reported that for the last two weeks before reaching the Pole travel was “practically unrestricted...In many cases the lead direction was north, affording us the luxury of effortless travel.”
Measurements of the ocean depth (soundings) taken by Peary on the trek from Cape Columbia to the Pole contribute significantly to the much-debated question of where his track lay.
