Ram accelerator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A ram accelerator is a gun that utilizes ramjet or scramjet combustion modes to accelerate a projectile to extremely high speeds.
Ram accelerators optimized to use supersonic combustion modes can generate even higher velocities due to the ability to combust fuel that is still moving at supersonic speed.
With a ram accelerator, the projectile is propelled primarily by the reaction of the propellant gasses burning, not the pressure in the barrel behind it.

Ram accelerators optimized to use (Click link for more info and facts about supersonic combustion) supersonic combustion modes can generate even higher velocities due to the ability to combust fuel that is still moving at supersonic speed.
As the projectile moves further down the barrel, the amount of acceleration upon the projectile decreases, eventually reaching amounts trivial enough that a longer barrel is no longer justified (see (Click link for more info and facts about internal ballistics) internal ballistics).
Ram accelerators are currently used primarily for research into supersonic combustion.

RAM-Accelerator   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
This laboratory accelerator for ballistic studies differs from customary accelerators in that the acceleration energy is not released in a concentrated form and at a single moment (pulsed) but is distributed continuously in space and time.
The projectile acceleration is therefore quasi constant and low (ratio of 1:3).
The RAM accelerator consists of a conventional pre-accelerator (propellant powder gun) and a series of tubes arranged like steps one after another.

 Ram Accelerator
University of Washington researchers have devised a scheme called the ram accelerator, not totally unlike Verne's approach, that has the potential to send acceleration-insensitive cargo into space, and moreover, to launch it in a more cost-effective way than any other method devised to date.
In the ram accelerator, a projectile is accelerated by a combustion wave down a tube filled with propellant gas, achieving very high velocities.
In the ram accelerator, the centerbody is now the projectile; it is detached from the tube, which has been lengthened into a long, stationary launching tube.

The difference is that a ramjet or scramjet supplies thrust to an entire aircraft, whereas a ram accelerator supplies thrust to a small projectile.

ISL has developed a ram accelerator facility that bypassed the gasdynamic transition directly from subdetonative to superdetonative ignition.
To understand the combustion mechanism in a superdetonative mode ram accelerator according to the mixture strength, numerical simulations were done for ISL’s RAMAC 30 experiments by imposing external ignition energy on the combustor section to initiate detonation.
Numerical results of shot 224(30bar) and shot 225(40bar) showed normal acceleration with similar flame structure even though the magnitude of acceleration was different according to the fill pressure.

A large variety of initiation results in a ram accelerator have shown that a series of interactive parameters play a key role, such as the design of the facility, tube diameter, shape of both the projectile and sabot and the choice of the reactive propellant mixture.
Two different ram accelerators were used at ISL for this study, namely a 30-mm and a 90-mm-caliber.
In addition to the diameter effect, it was observed that the dimension of the sabot must be adapted not only to the caliber of the tube but also to both the launching device and vent section that are located before the ram accelerator tube.

Andrew's background is from a project called the Ram Accelerator, which is a ramjet/scramjet that does not carry fuel on board, but rather flies down a tube filled with premixed fuel and oxidizer at high pressure (50-200 bar).
Due the high pressure, the accelerations of the projectile are tremendous (50,000g's) and nearly constant, making the device capable of accelerating projectiles to velocities greater than conventional guns: http://students.washington.edu/~buckwadl/RAM/ram.html
The Ram Accelerator has already been successfully scaled up to 120 mm bore by the US Army Research Lab, and is currently being funding by the U.S. Navy as a possible "muzzle extension" to the current 5" guns to increase muzzle velocity and range.
