The new bridge is named the Rama VIII Bridge as a memorial to the king’s brother, King Ananda Mahidol, also known as King Rama VIII.
The Rama VIII Bridge is an asymmetrical cable-stayed structure with a single, 160 m tall inverted-Y tower that has a 15 m high glass observation deck at its top.

King Ananda Mahidol or Rama VIII (long royal name: Phrabat Somdej Phra Paramenthara Maha Ananda Mahidol Phra Athama Ramathibodinthra Thai: พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดล พระอัฐมรามาธิบดินทร (roughly "HM King Ananda Mahidol, the Eighth Ruler") (September 20, 1925 - June 9, 1946) was the eighth king of the Chakri dynasty of Thailand.
It was an interesting turn in the history of succession when King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) abdicated in 1935 due to political quarrels with the new quasi-democratic government as well as health problems, and abstained from exercising his right to name a successor.
