Ramakrishna was born in Bengal, India on February 17, 1836.
The reason Ramakrishna himself is not the founder of the Vedanta Society, but his beliefs are central to the Society, is because of his firm belief in not seeking out followers.
Sri Ramakrishna also believed in the Unity of Existence and had twenty concepts recorded by one of his disciples which are the foundation of Vedanta Society.

Since then the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission extended their spheres of activity, and had branches in different parts of the country and abroad.
Though the Ramakrishna Mission and the Ramakrishna Math their respective branches, are distinct legal entities, they are closely related.

The Ramakrishna Math is headquartered at Belur Math (in West Bengal, India), and shares the location with the related organisation, the Ramakrishna Mission.
The original monastery at Baranagar called Baranagar Math was shifted in January 1899 to a newly acquired plot of land at Belur in the district of Howrah.
This monastery, known as Belur Math, serves as the Mother House for all the monks of Ramakrishna Order who live in the various branch centres of Ramakrishna Math and/or the related Ramakrishna Mission in different parts of India and the world.

 The Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission
The Math and the Mission are closely related, for the Governing Body of the Mission is made up of the Trustees of the Math and the administrative work of the Mission is mostly in the hands of the monks of the Math.
Though the origin of both the Math and the Mission can be traced back to the days of Baranagore monastery, the Math was registered as a trust only in 1901, and the Mission, a registered society, in 1909, twelve years after it had been started by Swami Vivekananda on 1st May 1897.
The Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission have been from their very inception doing relief services in times of natural calamities like flood, famine, drought, etc. Public support is the principal resource on which relief work depends.

The first call was made to Belur Math and on the request of the esteemed citizens in 1927 a center was opened in New Delhi by Swami Sarvanandaji, disciple of the first President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission and one of the direct disciples of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Brahmanandaji.
On 5th Nov, 1954, in the evening at 4.00p.m., the foundation of the proposed Rs.3 lakh temple of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna was laid by His Holiness Srimat Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj, 7th President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, with appropriate rituals and in presence of over 250 devotees and friends.
Swami Ranganathananda 5th Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi, addressed the gathering on the significance of the ceremony and the object of erecting the proposed temple.

 Vivekananda Vedanta Network - Ramakrishna Order
The first monastery (Sanskrit, Math) at Baranagore, a northern suburb of Kolkata, was organized by Ramakrishna’s monastic disciples headed by Swami Vivekananda.
Both the Math and the Mission gradually extended their spheres of activity as a result of which a number of branches in different parts of India and abroad came into existence.
In the West, the branches of the Ramakrishna Order are generally known as "Vedanta Society." The Math was run by the Brahmacharinis for some years successfully under the guidance of the Trustees of the Belur Math.
On the 26th August, 1959, Sri Sarada Math was given independent status and the Sannyasinis became its Trustees by virtue of a Deed of Trust executed by the President of the Ramakrishna Math.
Thus, Sri Sarada Math and the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, though legally separate, are basically one with the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, being their counterparts.

Calcutta, May 25: Swami Gahananandaji was today elected the 14th president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission at a meeting of the Math’s board of trustees and the Mission’s governing body.
Gahananandaji, one of the vice-presidents of the Math and Mission since April 14, 1992, succeeds Swami Ranganathanandaji, the scholar and internationally acclaimed speaker, who died at the age of 96 at a city nursing home on April 25.
He was also secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan in the city and was one of the driving forces behind developing the hospital.
