This CD is called The Best of Rambling Syd Rumpo, and, indeed, the first 16 of the tracks are the best of Rambling Syd Rumpo, Kenneth Williams at his finest.
Rambling Syd first became a cultural icon when he sang his cordwangler's ballads in the BBC Radio series 'Round the Horne'.
The Syd Rumpo tunes are funny, and at times hilarious but it would seem that the recording is a reprise of the sketches recorded for the radio show and therefore lack the tension and anticipation of the BBC artefacts.

  Rambling Syd Rumpo
Rambling Syd Rumpo was a folk singer character played by English comedic genius Kenneth Williams in the radio comedy series Round the Horne.
The Rambling Syd sketches generally began with a short discourse on the nature of the song which would inexorably follow; these discourses in their own right would have assured Rambling Syd Rumpo a place in radio history as masterpieces of suggestivity and double-entendre.
For this, Rambling Syd was customarily introduced by Kenneth Horne, who would set things up by (for example) inquiring as to the nature and origin of the song.

Rambling Syd Rumpo (Kenneth Williams) compiled his ganderbag of folk ditties from all parts of the world which he introduced after this fashion: 'This is a taddle gropers dance, sung by the vilagers of Musgrove Parva and it heralds the coming of the oak apple fairy, or sanitary inspector as he is called.'
He then sang the roundelay in a style many thought was lifted straight from the repertoire of folk acts long since vanished.

Rambling Syd was the itinerant folksinger who would weekly open his gander bag on BBC Radio's "Round the Horne".
Although Syd does not appear to have had a song specifically about Cludge Mollying, he mined the same vein as J.M.Blunt with his songs of dying occupations and outlawed social pastimes.

Rambling Syd Rumpo was created by Barry Took and Marty Feldman for Round The Horne, the BBC radio comedy which ran between 1965 and 1968.
The GruntFuttock character was part of one of their particular scetches which illustrated a very smutty, very eccentric old Englishman in a very rural tiny seaside village (West Country, like Somerset, not like Brighton), whose favourite pasttime was something involving his 'cordwangler', and that a pretty young girl had some effect on his 'moolies'.

Working alongside Hugh Paddick, Betty Marsden, Bill Pertwee and the leader of the gang, Kenneth Horne, the show had many memorable characters - many of them played by Ken. First there was Rambling Syd Rumpo, the ballad singing yokel who often confused Horne with talk of "nadgers and cordwangling".
Then there was Peasmold Gruntfuttock, who wanted to get his hands on Judith Chalmers; Sandy of Julian and Sandy - two out of work actors, trying to earn a bob by offering their services in all different ways!
