One reason why the BJP has been insisting on a negotiated settlement of the Ayodhya problem is that it is fully aware of the pitfalls of a judicial verdict, which is bound to displease one of the two litigants involved in the dispute.
When it opted for the Ramjanmabhoomi movement, it was at a loss for an issue which could energise its cadres, who were still demoralised after the crushing defeat in 1984 when the party was reduced to a mere two seats in the Lok Sabha.
Yet, when the BJP turned to religious revivalism by supporting the VHP’s Ramjanmabhoomi agitation in its Palanpur resolution in 1989, it didn’t bother to reflect that it was making a departure from even its Jan Sangh past.
