  About Ramkhamhaeng University
Before the establishment of Ramkhamhaeng University in 1971, Thailand had long suffered what might be called "a crisis in the quest for higher education".
The university was granted permission to use a 300 rai (125 acre) plot of land in the eastern suburb of Bangkok as its main campus; this land once housed the International Trade Fair.
In 1999, Ramkhamhaeng University expanded its educational opportunities by forming the Institute of International Studies (IIS-RU) as a faculty for the university’s international program to satisfy the ever growing demand for international higher education.

Ramkhamhaeng the Great - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pho Khun Ramkhamhaeng; Thai: พ่อขุนรามคำแหงมหาราช) was the third king of the Phra Ruang dynasty, ruling the Sukhothai kingdom (a forerunner of the modern kingdom of Thailand) from 1277 to 1317, during its most prosperous era.
Ramkhamhaeng expanded his kingdom as far as Lampang, Phrae and Nan in the north, Phitsanulok and Vientiane in the east, Mon in the west, as far as the Gulf of Bengal in the northwest and Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south.
Ramkhamhaeng is traditionally credited with developing the Thai alphabet (Lai Sue Thai) from earlier Khmer, Mon and Burmese scripts, on the evidence of an inscription (the Ramkhamhaeng stele, see below) dated to 1283 or 1292 which bears the earliest known Thai writing.

Sukhothai kingdom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ramkhamhaeng is credited with designing the Thai alphabet (traditionally dated from 1283, on the evidence of the controversial Ramkhamhaeng stele, an inscribed stone allegedly bearing the earliest known Thai writing).
At its peak, supposedly stretching from Martaban (now in Burma) to Luang Prabang (now in Laos) and down the Malay Peninsula as far south as Nakhon Si Thammarat, the kingdom's sphere of influence was larger than that of modern Thailand, although the degree of control exercised over outlying areas was variable.
Around 1430 Thammaracha moved his capital to Phitsanulok, and after his death in 1438 the kingdom was reduced in status to a mere province of Ayutthaya.
