  Ramon Magsaysay Award Information
The Ramon Magsaysay Award was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) based in New York City.
With the concurrence of the Philippine government, the prize was created to commemorate Ramon Magsaysay, the late president of the Philippines, and to perpetuate his example of integrity in government, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society.
The Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership honors "individuals, forty years of age and below, doing outstanding work on issues of social change in their communities, but whose leadership is not yet broadly recognized outside of these communities".

Ramon Magsaysay was president of the Philippines from 1953 until he died in a plane crash in 1957.
Magsaysay's heirs - his son and namesake, Ramon Magsaysay Jr., is a senator - are not involved either, although his widow, Luz Magsaysay, and other family members attend the award ceremonies held on Aug. 31, the late president's birthday.
He was conferred the Magsaysay award for literature in 1995 anyway.
