Jaime Ramón Mercader del Río Hernández (February 7, 1914 – October 18, 1978) was a Spanish Communist who served as a foreign agent of the NKVD during Joseph Stalin's time as ruler of the USSR.
Mercader was born in 1914 in Barcelona, but spent much of his youth in France with his mother, Eustacia María Caridad del Río Hernández, after his parents separated.
An elaborate trap set by Mercader and other NKVD operatives in Mexico City failed on May 24, 1940, and a second attempt was planned.

Peter Sedgwick: The Mind Of An Assassin (1960)
Hampered by Mercader’s persistent attempts to mislead (even the possibility of faking the personality tests cannot be excluded), the Mexican prison psychiatrists seem to have tried to squeeze every drop of Freudian significance from their meagre data.
Mercader’s Stalinist convictions are seen as so much steam emanating upward from the overheated mechanism of his Oedipus complex, not as an independent causal force, influencing, and influenced by, the further factors of temperament and social identification.
Indeed, even Mercader’s manifest rejection of his father seems to have been at least in part, a crude consequence of the Spanish class-struggle: Don Pablo Mercader was, and still is, a Catholic reactionary who refers to Franco’s rebellion as “the national uprising”.

Socialism Today - The Assassination of Trotsky
It was this man, under numerous pseudonyms, who was to direct the assassination attempts against Trotsky in Mexico, in conjunction with his GPU associate and lover, Caridad Mercader, and her son Ramon Mercader, the agent who eventually murdered Trotsky.
Mercader had joined the Communist Party in Spain, and became active in its ranks in the period 1933-36 when it was already a Stalinised party.
There is ample evidence, however, that Mercader's mother, who escaped from Mexico with Eitingon, was presented to Stalin and decorated with a high bureaucratic honour for her son and herself.
