Breeding Toucans at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden
The first ramphastids to be kept at Riverbanks Zoo were 1.1 red-breasted toucans Ramphastos discolorus that were purchased from an importer in 1973.
They did not breed, although the male lived here for 10 years until his death, and the female for 4 years until her death.
Toco toucans Ramphastos toco were acquired in 1974.

I used this phylogeny to assess whether the striking similarity in plumage and bare-part coloration of sympatric Ramphastos is due to convergence or shared ancestry.
Ancestral character state reconstructions indicate that that at least half of the instances of similarity in plumage and bare-part coloration between sympatric Ramphastos are due to homoplasy.
Second, using mitochondrial and nuclear protein-coding DNA sequences, I reconstructed the phylogeny of ectoparasitic toucan chewing lice in the Austrophilopterus cancellosus subspecies complex, and compared this phylogeny to the phylogeny of the hosts to reconstruct the history of coevolutionary events in this host-parasite assemblage.

Use of Computerised Image Analysis for Objective Monitoring of Haemosiderin Quantities
Liver biopsy specimens were taken before the birds were placed on a low iron diet and again 8 months later; one bird died from other causes at 12 months, and a post-mortem specimen was also analysed.
Of the Ramphastidae, toco toucans (Ramphastos toco) are one of the species particularly susceptible to hemochromatosis, which is a common cause of death of captive birds and a possible significant factor in the infrequency of successful captive breeding (Cornelissen and Ritchie 1994, Lowenstine and Munson 1999).
The aim of the current study was determine whether reductions occurred in hepatocellular iron levels in two toco toucans with hemochromatosis over an 8 month period of dietary modification, by histologic image analysis of liver biopsy specimens.

linear sequence of genera in Ramphastidae
Moyle (2004), using mtDNA (cytochrome b) and nuclear DNA (intron 7 of beta fibrinogen), found that Ramphastos was basal to all other genera (100% Bayesian posterior probability, and 100% bootstrap support).
The DNA-DNA hybridization results of Sibley and Ahlquist (1990) are consistent with a basal position of Ramphastos: they found Ramphastos was basal to Aulacorhynchus + Pteroglossus (but these were the only three genera sampled).
Although other permutations within the sequence are possible, the key point of the new sequence is to place basal Ramphastos first.

Toucans (Family Rhamphastidae) - picture and info
It's striking that the relation between the size of the Toucan's beak and the size of its body increases with the size of the species.
Small Toucan species have rather "normal" beaks, whereas the beaks of large species like the Toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) are huge, even if the size of the body is taken into consideration.
The Keel-billed toucans (Ramphastos sulfuratus), shown on the photo, are among the medium sized species.

The Channel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus) is a near-passerine bird which breeds in Trinidad and in tropical South America east of the Andes and as far south as southern Brazil.
The western form of this bird, the Yellow-ridged Toucan, was previously considered to be a separate species, Ramphastos culminatus, but the two races readily interbreed.

I suspect that t he rationale, which I cannot find, was based on the reasonable assumption that the genus with the smallest, shortest-billed species, Aulacorhynchus, was the most barbet-like and thus was the most "primitive" in the family, and Ramphastos, the genus with the largest, least-barbet-like species, was the most "recent."
