Nottinghamshire: history and archaeology | Miscellaneous articles: The History of the Manor of Rampton (1)
Rampton is now in the Wapentake of Bassetlaw, but was formerly in that of Oswardbec, which has long since ceased to exist.
It is stated (Testa de Nevill) that he held a knight's fee in Rampton of the Countess of Ewe (of the honour of Tickhill) which she holds of the King of old feoffment.
She married John Stanhope, circa 1374, and by means of this marriage the manor of Rampton passed to the family of Stanhope, having been in possession of the Maulovell family since the middle of the 12th century, that is about 200 years.

Nottinghamshire: history and archaeology | Great Houses of Nottinghamshire: Rampton
Rampton was originally, after the Conquest, the property of Roger do Busli, who seems to have acquired enormous slices of land up and down the county, and before it came into the hands of the Eyres it belonged to the  Stanhopes, the Malovels, and the Babingtons.
The chancel of Rampton Church is filled with mural monuments to the memory of different members of the family, which included an archdeacon of Nottingham; and in the churches of Derbyshire you may find numerous records of them.
Rampton Manor is said to occupy an elevated position, though this is hardly apparent to one sitting in the comfortable dining room, and looking over the park and meadow land, which spreads away towards the river.

This can be seen at sites such as Willington, Gamston, Rampton and Holme Pierrepont, where although landscape boundaries were already well established by the late Iron Age, they provided a frame for transitory occupation (Wheeler 1979; Knight 1992; Ponsford 1992; O'Brien 1978b; Guilbert, Fearn and Woodhouse 1994).

Under plans announced this year to reorganise the three hospitals, all women patients are to be moved out of Broadmoor and Ashworth - a strategy backed by the commission, though it is concerned that some women will simply be transferred to Rampton, which will be unable to cope.
