Battle of Ramree Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Ramree Island was fought for six weeks during January and February 1945, as part of the British Fourteenth Army 1944/45 offensive on the Southern Front of the Burma Campaign during World War II.
Ramree Island lies off the Burma coast and was captured along with the rest of Southern Burma, during the early stages of the Burma Campaign, by the rapidly advancing Imperial Japanese Army in 1942.
However, these claims are disputed, and interviews with senior residents of Ramree deny that crocodiles attacked the beleaguered Japanese soldiers.

 Kyaukpyu - LoveToKnow 1911
KYAUKPYU, a district in the Arakan division of Lower Burma, on the eastern coast of the Bay of Bengal.
It consists of, first, a strip of mainland along the Bay of Bengal, extending from the An pass, across the main range, to the Ma-i River, and, secondly, the large islands of Ramree and Cheduba, with many others to the south, lying off the coast of Sandoway.
Between the mainland and Ramree lies a group of islands separated by deep, narrow, salt-water inlets, forming the north-eastern shore of Kyaukpyu harbour, which extends for nearly 30 m.

Ramree Judi was taken as a breeding queen by Moira Swift and Marguerite Silverman (Sabra Burmese), Ramree Mata Mas was initially taken by Pam Evely, but later transferred to Rev Briscoe (Sittang Burmese), with Elizabeth Caldicott retaining Ramree Mimpi Elok and Ramree Yasmin.
When Ramree Judi gave birth to a litter by her sire on 20th April 1971 it came as a surprise to find that one of the kittens, named Sabra Honeymist Will, was actually a platinum (later called lilac), proving that Kari-Simone also carried the blue gene.
Ramree Betina Bapa, a lilac daughter of Mimpi Elok, was mated to Pussinboots Golden Lustre, and produced two blue tortie females as well as three blue males.

RAMREE ISLAND is about 50 miles long and 20 miles wide and lies about 12 miles from the mainland with the smaller island of CHEDUIA about five miles south.
RAMREE ISLAND has, apart from the two towns of KYAUKPYU (on the north-western tip) and RAMREE (half way down the east coast facing the mainland,) only small villages and hamlets.
As no further fighting of any extent was taking place on the island all that remained was for the naval forces to patrol the seaway between RAMREE and the mainland killing the few enemy who tried to escape from the swamp and of these few who drowned or were eaten by the sharks.

Ramree Island was the scene of an alleged massacre of Japanese soldiers by Crocodylus porosus during World War II although there is some doubt, based on historical accounts, that this event actually occurred.
We interviewed a number of older Ramree Island residents and they unanimously discounted any suggestion that large numbers of soldiers fell prey to crocodiles.
