The main Dover trunk line took a route via Ashford and it was at the latter which the SER would connect a rail link from the Isle of Thanet, giving the Victorian coastal resorts of Margate and Ramsgate a railway line to the capital (although a rather circuitous one).
Nevertheless, the rivals continued their fierce competition, which by the 1880's was also apparent in North Kent after the construction of rival lines on the Isle of Grain and Isle of Sheppey by the SER and LCandDR respectively.
Ramsgate SER subsequently became ''Ramsgate Town'' and Ramsgate CandD became ''Ramsgate Harbour''.

November 9th 1938 at Ramsgate’s West Cliff Hall saw the election of Alderman Arthur Bloomfield Courtenay Kempe as Mayor of Ramsgate.
This city had good relations with Ramsgate, for when Ramsgate was badly bombed in the First World War it had sent £5,000 to help the victims.
Their leader was shot down by a gun on a trawler off Ramsgate – they circled the town and in three minutes dropped 500 bombs.
