The host unit at Ramstein Air Base is the 435th Air Base Wing, which supports the 86th Airlift Wing, 38th Combat Support Wing as well as other units at the base and surrounding region.
Ramstein was part of USAFE's Third Air Force, with headquarters at RAF Mildenhall, the United Kingdom until 1 November 2005.

Ramstein Air Base is a great example of international collaboration--designed by French engineers, constructed by German contractors, and operated by the US Air Force.
In January 1953, the base housed the 86th Fighter Bomber Wing with its F-84F aircraft, and later all-weather F-86D "Sabre" jets, and in August 1954, the name of the wing was changed to reflect a new mission.
The 316th Air Division was deactivated 1 May 1991, and the 86th Tactical Fighter Wing merged with the 377 Combat Support Wing to form the 86th Fighter Wing.

The air chiefs of 19 nations, including six of the seven new member nations accessed in March, came together to discuss current operations, the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, support to the NATO Response Force, and air policing.
According to the air marshal, NATO Air continues to contribute deployed tactical forces performing air tasks ranging from tactical airlift and medical evacuation to airborne reconnaissance, deployment of quick-reaction forces and close-air support.
The next event where the NATO air forces will test their interoperability skills together is at the NATO Air Meet, scheduled for Sept. 4 to 16 at Konya Air Base, Turkey.
