Ran (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ran was the final film of Kurosawa's "third period" (1965-1985), a time where he had difficulty securing support for his pictures, and was frequently forced to seek foreign financial backing.
By contrast, the world of Ran is a Hobbesian world, where life is an endless cycle of suffering and everybody is a villain or a victim, and in many cases both.
In Ran, the vehicle for apocalyptic destruction is the arquebus, an early firearm that was introduced to Japan in the 1500s.

Akira Kurosawa's "Ran" remains a bloody and spectacular depiction of doomsday karma -- and the trickle-down theory of anarchy.
Recently rewatching "Ran," Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, I was struck by an echo of David Lynch's marvelous "The Straight Story." The aging hero of Lynch's film illustrates the strength of family with sticks: You can break a single stick, he says, but you can never break a bundle.
"Ran" is one of the last big-screen extravaganzas to depict vast and terrifying Nature and the thrill and awfulness of cataclysmic battle without overreliance on special effects.

As familial tensions rise and betrayal sends Lord Hidetora into the throes of escalating madness, Ran (the title is the Japanese character for "chaos" or "rebellion") reaches a fever pitch through epic battles and a fortress assault that is simply one of the most amazing sequences on film.
Kurosawa's last undisputed masterpiece, "Ran" adapts "King Lear" (Shakespeare was Kurosawa's favorite writer) placing it during the 16th century in Japan.

Kurosawa agonized over RAN for a decade, and with each passing year, his dream of filming this epic seemed to recede.
Foreboding hangs over RAN like mist in the dank forests of Lord Hidetora’s estates, masking danger, and hiding true enemies from one another until they are within a sword’s length.
For these antiheroes, the news is always bad; a stable life is transformed from within by corrosion of the family, and of the state, corrosion brought on by the failure of the patriarch to listen and love well enough in the long years before the crisis.

The levels in which Ran works are so multi-layered and deep that it takes an understanding of the production of the film to truly appreciate the film entirely.
Akira Kurosawa made Ran in his later years, which is interesting considering the subject of the film.
Ran is built upon metaphors, and with each viewing there are new lessons to be learned in this bleak and somewhat pessimistic tale of humanity.

With Ran, legendary director Akira Kurosawa reimagines Shakespeare’s King Lear as a singular historical epic set in sixteenth-century Japan.
Majestic in scope, the film is Kurosawa’s late-life masterpiece, a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power.

PLEASE NOTE that this review is of Ran: The Masterworks Edition released by Wellspring in 2003 (see the box cover above) – which is not to be confused with the earlier DVD release.
We see, and feel, the "Ran," the literal chaos of the title, in the destruction of the bonds of duty which once united a son to his father, a brother to his brother, and a samurai to his lord.
Kyoami is, in a way, the healing opposite of the chaos ("Ran") of the title, as he balances both masculine and feminine energy, great courage as well as flexibility and tenderness.

There is so much genius in the body of Kurosawa's work that the word "masterpiece" becomes a tautology - the films are that consistently rich in content and impeccable in execution.
What superlatives are left, then, for Ran (Chaos) - a late (1985), large-scale work that encompasses four decades of filmmaking experience and the wisdom of a lifetime?
In Ran, Kurosawa uses the inspiration of Shakespeare's Lear, the aged and weary king who divides his kingdom among his three daughters and is repaid in miseries for his own vanities.
