Directed and co-written by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, the enormously poetic film is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear—a land-wealthy lord decides to divide his property among his three children; tragedy results—with allusions to numerous samurai legends as well.
Ran is not a movie for the whole family.
Though Kurosawa is judicious in his use of gore (he tends to shoot around graphic violence, showing reactions and, in one notorious scene, a gruesome spray of blood), battle scenes and all their consequences are his trademark.

It's too bad that there's not more people like Kurosawa around (sadly, he died from a stroke in 1998), or else Hollywood wouldn't be producing the huge amounts of watered-down and mind-numbing garbage that they are now.
"Ran" is brilliant not only for the battle scenes, but for the well-written storyline that can only be crafted by Kurosawa and Co..
The acting, especially the scenes where Hidetora descends into madness and then re-unites with family he hurt in the past, are superb.
