In 1568, during the reign of Pratap's father Rana Udai Singh II, Mewar was conquered by the Mughal Emperor Akbar; its capital Chittor was sacked.
Rana Pratap greivously insulted Raja Man Singh on this point; the latter came back at the head of a huge Mughal army.
However, Rana Pratap made good his escape to the hills, and later waged a guerrilla struggle against the occupying Mughal forces, with the aid of the Bhil tribesmen of the hills.

Rana Sanga, also known as Sangram Singh, was the rana (king) of Mewar, in present-day Rajasthan state of western India, from 1509 to 1527.
