This album is remarkable not for any sort of innovation or deviation, but for how similar it is to everything else Erasure does; almost bland.
Frequently considered the sonic and lyrical successors of The Clash, Rancid embodies an 'old school' punk mentality with their sky-high mohawks, tattoos, leather studded jackets, and short, furious songs, mixed in with generous helpings of ska (yes people, ska does not necessarily mean horns).
This album is a wonderful pop-guitar rock confection, with chiming guitars, wry lyrics, and pretty vocal harmonies, and represents for the band an artistic peak and a commercial breakthrough that never really emerged.

After several fine, if rather derivative, albums of ska-inflected punk rock, and after years of being criticized for relying unduly on gestures lifted from the Clash, Rancid has come roaring out with the harshest and most consistent album of their career.

 Punk Globe Magazine Online
Where their heroes The Clash had been at the forefront of what was in some respects a social and musical movement, Rancid became flag bearers for a generation of MTV punks that embraced the music on a superficial and aesthetic level with scant regard for the underlying messages of anarchy, banality and nihilism.
One thing is certain, Rancid's reputation suffered as a result, and it signaled the beginning of a backlash against the band that culminated in 2003 with the release of 'Indestructible', an album whose ironical title would become self evident in light of the misfortunes the band members were about to face.
Some would argue that Rancid compromised their ethics to achieve this success, but the truth is not so clear cut and Rancid are more than capable of hitting back in 2007 with a harder and faster record in the vein of '2000' that will again have critics ducking their heads.
