Rand (currency) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rand is the currency of South Africa.
The Rand was stronger than the U.S. dollar from the time of its inception in 1961 until 1982, when mounting political pressure combined with sanctions placed against the country because of apartheid started to erode its value.
By the end of 2002, the currency was trading at under R9 to the dollar again, and by the end of 2004 was trading at under R5.70 to the dollar.

 Ayn Rand Biographical FAQ
Ayn Rand was a twentieth-century novelist and philosopher.
Rand supported the existence of patents and copyrights, sometimes referred to more generally as "intellectual property," similar to the ones that exist under US law today (which is not to claim that she would necessarily agree with every aspect of current US law on these subjects).
Rand strongly disapproved of anarchism and in her later years appears to have associated that ideology with the term 'libertarian.' This association is further reaffirmed by the comments of Harry Binswanger in an article published a few months before Rand's death, in which he repeatedly refers to "'libertarian' anarchists."[*]

Talk:Rand (currency) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If taken literally, "rand" means "ridge" as it comes from the name 'Witwatersrand' or "Ridge of White Waters".
Presumably the name was chosen due to the fact that most gold mines at the time were on the Witwatersrand, and at the time gold mining underpinned the South African economy.
In any case, any translations of the word are ignored, it's seen as being a word on its own without alternate meaning.

Global financial clouds on Africa's horizon
When the value of South Africa's currency, the rand, plummeted in December, local analysts blamed international currency speculators or possible financial contagion from the collapse of the Argentine economy.
Currencies collapsed, economies contracted, businesses went bankrupt, banks were left holding uncollectable loans, poverty spread massively, and in Indonesia widespread unemployment contributed to the downfall of the long-time president.
Essentially, currency speculators -- clearing banks, investment houses, hedge funds and rich individuals -- gamble on fluctuations in world currencies, betting, for example, that the rand may be devalued against the dollar in the near future.
