Rand Miller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rand Miller (born January 17, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) co-founded Cyan (now Cyan Worlds) with brother Robyn Miller and became famous from the unexpected success of their computer game Myst, which remained the number one-selling game for the remainder of the 1990s.
Miller, being a son of an Anabaptist minister, maintains the religious views that are traits of his family, which is part of the reason there is no major violence, sexual or otherwise potentially offensive content in Cyan's games—the experience should be as rich as possible, while keeping distracting matters out.
Thus, the person shocked the most by Uru Live's failure could very well be Rand Miller, as reflected by the letter to the community[2] written to try and explain why Uru Live had to be shut down for an indefinite amount of time, quite possibly forever.

Robyn Miller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robyn Charles Miller (born August 6, 1966, in Dallas, Texas) co-founded Cyan Worlds (originally Cyan) with brother Rand Miller.
Miller is known for his contributions in the areas of direction and design, especially in the area of visual design—the look and feel of the Myst and Riven worlds.
Richard Vander Wende, co-director and co-designer of Riven, was likewise responsible for orchestrating the visual language of that world.

 Imaginarium Online, Features
Rand Miller was working as a programmer in a bank in Texas when he pitched the idea of world-making to his artist brother Robyn.
Rand stayed behind as CEO of their company, Cyan, where he oversees development of a supersecret project code-named “Mudpie,” about which rumors have been flying on the web for over a year.
In person, Rand Miller looked very like his world-making character Atrus from Myst and Riven (sans robe), and we were pleased to find his personality was as laid-back as a country farmer and as open about both his faith and his creativity as world-makers Tolkien and C. Lewis, whose tradition he carries on.

 Enter the Myst
Rand Miller and his brother Robyn created the megahit CD disc together under the corporate name of Cyan, the independent software company that they founded to develop CDs under the aegis of Broderbund Software of Novato, California.
I asked Rand about how he and his brother, Robyn, approached the idea of interactive storytelling for Myst, which was begun when interactives were mostly games, he responded in terms of his earlier work.
Rand: We started our design work and realized that we would need to have even more story and history than would be revealed in the game itself.

Salon | 21st: "Myst" partnership is riven
In London to promote the release of "Riven" for the Sony PlayStation, Rand Miller emphasized that the brothers' dissolution of their partnership was a friendly affair.
Rand and I agreed that this would not be best achieved within the walls of Cyan, which is, at its core, an interactive company.
Rand's amiability toward his brother comes across clearly, but it's nonetheless plainly tempered by the experience of working for many years with a strong creative personality.

Military Readiness: Women Are Not a Problem
Two researchers from RAND's National Defense Research Institute, Margaret C. Harrell and Laura L. Miller, have examined the progress of the services in expanding opportunities for women and the effect of that expansion on the readiness, cohesion, and morale of selected units.
For example, some Army commanders try to limit the number of women in any one unit by sending "surplus" women to work in other occupations, and some commanders refuse to assign women to newly opened units based on their interpretations about what constitutes collocation with a unit engaged in direct combat.

In 1987, Rand Miller and his brother Robyn formed Cyan in the small US town of Spokane, a 45 minute flight from Seattle.
It's evident Rand isn't afraid to try new things, and push boundaries when it comes to delivering experiences in games, even if he himself sometimes wonders if it is worth it.
As Rand Miller leaves the fantasy world of Myst behind after nearly 15 years of interactive storytelling, it's easy to believe his next adventure will have us all wired come the next generation.

In the acknowledgements to this first novel in a projected series, Wingrove is thanked by his coauthors, the Miller brothers, "for accomplishing the impossible." Wingrove's achievement certainly is improbable, at least judging from the sorry results of other computer-game-to-novel translations, like the paperback spinoffs of Doom.
The authors follow their hero, Atrus, from breech birth (and his mother's resultant death) into his uneasy relationship with Gehn, the father who abandoned him at birth and who now wants to recreate the culture of the D'ni, beings whose writings could conjure?or at least discover?worlds.
The Miller brothers, creators of the best-selling, award-winning CD-ROM MYST, have attempted to re-create the colorful, three-dimensional world of their game in a prequel focusing on Atrus' life before he journeyed to MYST.

Miller was unable to discuss any of the specifics behind the deal that has allowed Cyan Worlds to keep its doors open, but hopes to offer more public details within the next month or two.
