Randolph Air Force Base, about fifteen miles northeast of San Antonio, was identified as the "West Point of the Air" when it was dedicated as a flying-training base on June 20, 1930.
Frank P. Lahm (later known as "the father of Randolph Field") was selected to fill this position, which proved to be a pivotal event in the history of Randolph Air Force Base.
The base streets were laid out concentrically, and the aircraft ramps and runways on the east, west, and south portions of the base formed a square perimeter around the circular layout of the field.

RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Tex., June 24 -- A military judge Friday halted the rape trial of an officer accused of assaulting an Air Force Academy classmate after the accuser's civilian rape counselor refused to relinquish records of their conversations.
Harding, a pilot trainee stationed at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, is accused of raping Brakey in 2000 and assaulting the other cadet in 1999.
Her attorneys said that she will not give up the records, which she considers confidential, and that they will file an emergency appeal if she is arrested.
