Randolph County, the state's largest county, was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in October 1786 from Harrison County.
According to the first national census taken In 1790, Randolph County had the smallest population (951) of the nine counties that were then in existence and fell within the current boundaries of West Virginia.
The act creating Randolph County provided that the first meeting of the county court was to take place at Benjamin Wilson's home in Tygart's Valley, about three miles south of present-day Beverly.

Four landholders in Randolph County, their land identified by A, B, C and D in Figure 1, each donated a 12-1/2-acre triangle from adjoining corners of their properties to provide land for a county seat, later to be called Huntsville.
Montgomery County's courthouse of 1865 was almost identical, and Lincoln County's of 1869, very similar, both the work of Gustave Bachmann.
Although this continues to be the official courthouse of Randolph County, the original design has been lost through several remodelings and a fire in July 1955.

The act establishing the county authorized the first court and all subsequent courts to be held at the home of Abraham Reese unless otherwise decided upon by the justices of the peace until a courthouse could be built.
In 1792 an act was passed authorizing commissioners to select a site in the center of the county and have a new courthouse erected, as the old courthouse was not in the center of the county.
In 1796 Asheborough was established as the county seat on the land of Jesse Henley.

My Lowry's are the Somerset County (PA), then Westmoreland County (PA) Lowrys, some of whom migrated in the early 1870s ultimately to Sumner County, KS, where I live.
The last time he is seen is in the 1870 census of Ligonier, Westmoreland County, PA, which was 2 years before his brother came to Kansas, and 4 years before his parents came to Kansas.
Two of Valentine's sister, Alice P. Rice, and Lena Margaret Durkee, lived in Randolph County during the time of the 1880 census, thus our family does have this connection with Randolph County.
