Randolph Quirk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lord Quirk of Bloomsbury (born Charles Randolph Quirk in 1920) is a British linguist.
This was a compilation of a large body of English language data, comprising around one million words as they were then used in everyday life.
The project was to be the foundation of Quirk's A Comprehensive Grammar Of The English Language, a widely-used textbook around the world.

Quirk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Professor Quirk may be judged by this book which distils what he knows about language for the general reader.
Dr Johnson was a great critic who, like Professor Quirk, compiled (or wrote) a dictionary but he no more became a critic by studying lexicography than Charles Ives became a composer by selling insurance (or Beethoven became one by going deaf).
Quirk and Stein aren’t, of course, (perish the thought) “prescriptive” or “judgmental”, or even very critical (Lord Annan’s prose is one of the glories they treasure), but they do have a standard to judge by and, when they aren’t being lyrical, they use it: “appropriateness”.

Language Log: A letter from the Lord Quirk
He's a useful example because he was born Randolph Quirk and then worked his way upward through the ranks, bearing the official designations Mr Quirk, Dr Quirk, Professor Quirk, Vice Chancellor Quirk, Sir Randolph, and finally Lord Quirk of Bloomsbury.
A letter from England was addressed to "Lord Randle of Quirk" (that one must have been dictated over a bad cell phone connection).
It was addressed by a government minister to a wide range of figures in the two houses of parliament, including influential members of the House of Lords, many of whom were very upset at the Labour government's plans to ban fox-hunting.

Let's take as an example the most distinguished and honored grammarian alive, the former Randolph Quirk, who rose through the ranks from ordinary Mr through doctor of philosophy, professor, vice chancellor, knight, and lord.
Then he was knighted, and became Sir Randolph Quirk, and at that time it would have been acceptable to address him in a letter with Dear Sir Randolph.
In consequence, *Lord Randolph is not grammatical (or at least, not in accord with the social conventions, given that Randolph is classified as a forename) as a reference to Lord Quirk.

Whenever I glance through the immense Grammar of Contemporary English (1972) by Randolph Quirk and his associates, I am impressed by the dozens of lively examples of grammatical constructions that bind together the words in a sentence, that create coherence.
Quirk's Grammar refers to parts of the sentence as "tone units," units of information signalled by intonation.
Quirk illustrates ways that two sentences are linked; I have revised his examples to show linkages within single sentences.

I will also suggest my favourite grammar book: another "formal" grammar (not as in "opposite to informal" but as in "different from pedagogical, functional, etc"), "A Grammar of Contemporary English", by Randolph Quirk, S. Greenbaum, G. Leech and J. Svartvik.
This book is out of print but I wouldn't say it is old-fashioned even when it was last published perhaps 20 years ago.
Another book by Quirk and Greenbaum, which I believe is also out of print, is "A University Grammar of English".

 ENL 6206 Beowulf in Transformation
Your question, for example, could relate to speech acts in the Beowulf-Unferth exchange included in a Readings sequence titled "Three Challenges to the Young Hero." If your particular interest is sound change, this question could relate to sound changes that have obscured relationships between Old English and Modern English verbs.
If morphology is your game, you may find a way to relate Quirk and Wrenn's presentation of Old English word formation processes to a Beowulf passage or a Grendel sequence that demonstrates John Gardner's ability to recapture the feel of Old English.
Comparing super-literal and natural-sounding translations could lead to a question that would lead to further understanding of changes in English sentence patterns.

 Which Quirk?
In my reading of this forum’s threads to learn English, I encountered several times “Quirk.” I googled “Quirk” and I found Randolph Quirk.
He had collaborated in writing “A Students Grammar of the English Language” and “A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language.” Which book should I choose to learn English considering that I would like to work intensively on my English and also that I’m not exactly a spring chicken?
Of the two, I'd recommend A Student's Grammar of the Eh Language, Greenbaum & Quirk-- it's a shorter, revised version of their Comprehensive Grammar (with Leech and Svartvik).
