Random Harvest is their latest release, a dusty marriage of rock, Latin, and country influences resulting in a deserted atmosphere so cold and lonely, yet so effortlessly uplifting.
The imagery and feelings Random Harvest invokes are the biggest reasons that the album is so compelling.
Having heard no previous work from Friends of Dean Martinez coming into Random Harvest, I frequently found myself in awe of the way the band takes varying influences and uses them to craft songs ripe with talent and emotion.

Though its double-amnesia contrivance would perhaps embarrass an episode of "Diff'rent Strokes", it's impossible not to be a little touched--if not by a literal interpretation of the plot, then by the yearning for the titanic reconciliation facilitated by its crisis.
Unless you count the Freudian game-playing mentioned earlier, there's little thematic interest to be had from Random Harvest: it's naked and on-the-surface, leaving sophisticated viewers high and dry should they want to dig for deeper meaning.
Though Warner's fullscreen DVD presentation of Random Harvest is marred by a seemingly out-of-register image during the early scenes, both it and mild print debris clear up in time to leave us with a positive impression of the studio's restoration efforts.

Chips, Lost Horizon) seemed, in mid-century, tailor-made for cinematic adaptation, Random Harvest begins in the final days of World War I. In an asylum, a man known only as John Smith (Ronald Coleman) is coping with shell shock and amnesia.
Random Harvest is credited to three scripters and directed by Mervyn LeRoy, a conventionally minded and pedestrian studio hack whose career spanned most of the 20th century before being put out to pasture in the 1960s.
Still, it's easy to see why Maddin loves the film, especially in shots such as one early in the film of Smith's yearning hopefulness when an elderly couple drop by the asylum to confirm if Smith is their long lost son.

Maybe because (untypically) the first movie in which I saw Garson (decades after it was released: I'm not that old!) was her break-out Elilzabeth Bennett in the 1940 "Pride and Prejudice," I am predisposed to be sympathetic to the characters she played in other movies.
Colman was Garson's match in mellifluous elocution, so that "Random Harvest" has some of the most beautifully pronounced corny dialogue ever.
I guess I have made it clear that I was unable to suspend disbelief in what happens in "Random Harvest" to wallow in the emotions.

OFFOFFOFF theater review RANDOM HARVEST play by Richard Willett with Patrick Welsh, Ann Talman, Jay Alvarez, Kate ...
There are many themes interwoven in this very thoughtful and sometimes humorous play by the author of the excellent "Triptych," and you can't necessarily point to a single one as the dominant message of "Random Harvest." But it's clearly a play about characters who respond to hardship by closing themselves off from others.
They're not as blithely happy as the characters who do have social skills, and yet within their reclusive little worlds they are pushed to the limit for better and for worse.
The crowd favorite, though, was Patricia Randell (like Downing a Triptych" veteran) as the marvelous-despite-being-stone-dead Greer Garson, giving the character an over-the-top sense of her own glamour that's good for a laugh every time she pops on or off the stage.

RANDOM HARVEST is without a doubt one of the most convoluted love stories to ever come out of Hollywood and also one of the best.
While the tale of these star-crossed lovers may be a little extreme in the struggles they fight to overcome, the story is well-developed and the acting rarely overplayed.

While he still has no memory of her, he finally falls in love with her again (after a fashion), and they remarry, with Paula never giving up hope that he will one day remember that he was in love with her.
Colman offers a superb performance, navigating the shifts in his character's changing mental state with an ease that alone sells the story: in the opening scene where he is shown to a couple at the asylum who think he may be their son, Colman is absolutely heartbreaking.
Visually the source material is in wonderful condition, remarkably clean and free of damage or debris (though there is one minor, split-second skip in the scene where Colman is hit by the taxi, and a couple of equally split-second white lines, which were hardly noticeable).
