Random House - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Random House is a publishing division of the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG, which acquired it in 1998.
Random House entered reference publishing in 1947 with the American College Dictionary, which was followed in 1966 by its first unabridged dictionary.
The publisher's main office is located at 1745 Broadway in Manhattan, in a 684-foot tower completed in 2003 and spanning the entire west side of the block between West 55th Street and west 56th.

Random House Dictionary of the English Language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged was the original name of a large American dictionary, first published in 1966, and recently renamed the Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.
Their first dictionary was Clarence Barnhart 's American College Dictionary, published in 1947, and based primarily on The New Century Dictionary, an abridgement of the Century.
Random House incorporated the name Webster's into its title after an injunction won by Merriam Webster preventing its use on their college edition was overturned on appeal.

 Random House Webster's College Dictionary.
The first edition of the Random House Webster's College Dictionary (RHWCD), published in 1991, was not well received even though it was created from the database of the 1987 printing of the Random House Unabridged Dictionary.
In addition to instructions for using the dictionary, the introductory material in RHWCD includes a discussion on defining our language in the twenty-first century, with a list of new words by decades from the 1940s to the 1990s.
Although the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition [RBB Je 97] is still considered the standard, RHWCD has become the "new word" dictionary and is popular with high-school and college students.

The print dictionary continues its tradition of being very up-to-date, thanks in part to a computerized database that Random House has named its "Living Dictionary Project." According to the publisher, 1,000 new words and meanings have been added to the work since the 1987 printing, with another 1,500 revisions to entries and definitions.
While in Dictionary, a menu bar at the bottom of the screen offers further options with the use of various function keys, for example, to move to the previous or next word in the dictionary or to copy and paste to a word-processing document.
The Random House may be the second largest dictionary, second to the full OED, at least until Oxford comes out with the New Shorter OED on CD this Spring (1997).

is a fine choice for a German-English dictionary, and perfect choice for students and others who need a dictionary they can stuff in their bag.
The volume is just the right size to fit nicely, even in a small messenger bag, but it avoids the problems of "compact dictionaries." The print is easily legible, the wordlist is quite comprehensive, and the paper is thick enough to highlite or turn quickly without fear of damage.
The dictionary might have been perfect if it had been bound with a thin hardcover to better prepare it for the rigors of life in a student's backpack, but that might have shown through in the price.
