A native of Teaneck, New Jersey, Edelman attended the University of Cincinnati as a pre-med major, Edelman nonetheless knew he'd rather study cadenzas than cadavers.
In 1970, Edelman headed to New York and was hired by then-music executive Tony Orlando as a staff writer for CBS.
In 1972, after relocating to Los Angeles, Edelman's talents caught the attention of the Carpenters, who recorded two of his songs and made him their opening act.
Fans of Edelman's work in this area are used to the combination of synthesized keyboarding and a moderate orchestra, and usually mixed into his sound is an array of percussive beats and modern rhythms.
Edelman performs the piano himself for these sequences, and while it's not complex or spectacular by any means, it is very effective.
Edelman wraps up the score very well, with the finale burst of theme followed by a restatement of the original urban theme, which had been used sparingly in the middle section of the score.

Edelman has been kicking around the music business since 1970 — first as an arranger, then a singer/songwriter, eventually becoming a popular recording artist, playing to tens of thousands of fans in the U.S. and England.
Edelman is at a loss to explain why his music resonates with so many listeners.
Edelman’s reputation as television’s premier sports-theme writer is actually the result of producers’ repeated use of his many anthem-style pieces from various movie and obscure-TV scores.
Edelman fans have been waiting for a return to his earlier magic.
It is here that Edelman introduces his main western theme and it is crafted in classic Rodeo-style that, as many other western themes have, pays proper homage to composer Aaron Copland.
RandyEdelman returns to his beautiful theme mastery in tracks such as Mountains and Streams (6), Breakout at the Mission (11), and Protecting a Princess (17).
Teaneck, New Jersey native RandyEdelman never dreamed that his music would be heard around the U.S. in such cultural events as the Olympics and the Super Bowl, but the last few years have increased the exposure of Edelman'sfilm scores in ways that few composers ever get to experience.
Edelman found great success especially in England, with several of his songs and albums appearing consistently on the U.K. charts, leading to a number of television appearances there.
Edelman for taking time out of his hectic schedule to talk about his career, his method of film scoring, the Mohicans controversy and why NBC Sports has become home to so much of his music.
Admittedly it's quite a memorable theme with the usual Edelman strings, brass and synth padding in the middle to pad out the orchestration where I would think a battalion of horns would do just fine.
There are also a couple of tracks that are arranged by RandyEdelman, although no indication is given as to what they were originally, traditional or having a specific composer.
Edelman is attempting to cross breed his soft style with very modest excitement and as a result it comes out sounding rather lame.
Edelman’s work for his other recent release, The Whole Nine Yards, offers little by way of a symphonic score, but instead delivers heavily jazz-influenced pieces.
Edelman remains one of the most active composers around and so we can still hold out some hope for, two reported projects for Edelman, The Gelfin and Shanghai Noon…that’s SOME hope.
Often, in the absense of the orchestral ambience that most score fans are accustomed to, Edelman's scores hinge on the rhythms and themes he inserts into them.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the BMI Richard Kirk Award for Outstanding Career Achievement to composerRandyEdelman.
Edelman became interested in using his background as a classical musician and arranger to pursue his interest in film scoring.
At the dinner, Edelman was honored by many of the directors with whom he has worked, being described by them as a passionate, focused, committed, free spirit with a devil-may-care attitude.
This is partially due to the ease with which the piece can be obtained and used by the studios in trailers, as well as the fact that the Dragonheart theme has quickly become one of the most easily recognizable of the decade.
Edelman's score, though not traditionally orchestral as large budget films would usually be accompanied by, maintains a sufficient level of fantasy to serve the film quite well.
Of course, since Edelman's style usually incorporates a multitude of synthesized orchestral sounds, your opinion of this score may depend solely on the fact that only a minimal orchestra was used in combination with electronics to create the music.
RandyEdelman has been in the film music business for quite some time and, while he hasn't reached oscar-nomination status, is the kind of reliable jobbing composer who will get the task done no matter what the subject.
Given that wide range of requirements, it is no surprise that Edelman's occasional excursions into other genres have invariably been satisfactory.
The "Shanghai Noon" series is an ideal vehicle to showcase Edelman's music since it allows him to underscore lots of action, delve into Chinese and other location-inspired sounds, while delivering it all with a humourous flourish.
RandyEdelman then, a classic songwriter re-presented, a classic songwriter.
This CD takes the songs back to the writer, with Edelman just playing the songs as they had originally been written by him......just a man and his piano.
RANDYEDELMAN (Composer) has created the scores for a wide range of movies.
For television, Edelman won an Emmy Award for the music for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Also a successful songwriter, Edelman wrote the words and music for Barry Manilow's classic hit “Weekend in New England.” He is currently on the charts as the co-composer of the new number one hit from rap artist Nelly, “My Place,” which can be heard on Nelly's chart-topping album, “Suit.”
In 1975 it flirted with the Adult Contemporary charts for RandyEdelman, featuring drums by Nigel Olsson of Elton John's group, with backing vocals from Olsson and his fellow EJ musician Dee Murray, along with Melissa Manchester, Ringo producer Vini Poncia and others.
All sorts of famous names are sprinkled throughout this disc, from "Highway Affair"'s guitar work by Andrew Gold to soundtrack king James Newton Howard playing synthesizer on the bouncy "Fresh Outa Love," one of the most memorable tunes on the record.
Noteworthy is the relationship between this disc and that of Edelman's wife, Jackie DeShannon's 1975 CBS release, New Arrangement.

RandyEdelman has had a variable career and one that, for me, has had only a very small selection of highlights.
You can tell this is going to be a BIG score by the fact that more musicians are credited than are required for the average Mahler symphony, particularly the twelve horn players and eight percussionists.
It does at least mean that Edelman gives the orchestra plenty to do, even if there are a lot of electric guitar riffs and amounts of synthetic percussion that would make Hans Zimmer blush.
