Upon approaching Kraft's stopped car, a brown Toyota, the officers were faced with a grisly sight: sitting in the car's passenger seat was a dead (and partially nude) U.S. marine, drugged and apparently strangled with his own shoelace.
Rumors that Kraft was a Resident Assistant his senior year appear to be inaccurate, based on the fact that he had a roommate and that he was dorm president, both of which are currently disqualifying factors.
Kraft and his lawyers continue to appeal the death sentence; their appeal has not yet been heard by the California State Supreme Court or other federal courts.

William Bonin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bonin killed three more boys in March, another three in April and two in May. The final victim was a teenager named Steven Wells, who was killed on June 2, 1980.
However, these later murders turned out to have been committed by Randy Steven Kraft, who acted entirely separately from Bonin but who just happened to have a similar method.
In fact there was a third freeway killer, Patrick Kearney, who also happened to select young men as victims from the freeways of Southern California during the 1970s.

All about Randy Kraft by Michael Newton
Randy Kraft was born in Long Beach, California on March 19, 1945, the fourth child and only son of parents who had moved to the state from Wyoming four years earlier.
As a child, Kraft was accident prone, breaking his collarbone at age one, tumbling down a flight of steps and knocking himself out a year later.
Randy seemed to fit right in, described by high school friends as falling “somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun” on political questions.

Randy Steven Kraft could claim that last tune as his theme song.
Believed by law enforcement in three states to be responsible for dozens of murders over a decade-long killing spree that began in the early 1970s, Kraft was arrested May 12, 1983, with a strangled Marine in the passenger seat of his Toyota.
That and several other homicides irrefutably implicate Kraft, but Randy is so schizoid he actually believes that he killed no one - a stretch that even gets Power giggling like, well, a maniac.

It is a curiosity of criminal history that Randy became the fourth chair in a standing San Quentin Death Row bridge game during the early 1990s - a game that also included Bonin along with two other notorious sex killers awaiting their dates with the executioner.
He knew about all of this and more because he was Randy's partner in crime - the long, lost accomplice who stood by and watched Randy Steven Kraft rape, mutilate and murder victim after hapless victim in the killing fields of Orange County.
My book about the Kraft case has generated a number of odd and intriguing phone conversations, including a chat with a former Marine from Mission Viejo who told me he'd hitched a ride from Camp Pendleton to Tustin with Kraft back in 1972 and very nearly became one of his victims.
