Randolph E. "Randy" Weston was born in Brooklyn on April 6, 1925; his father, a Jamaican born in Panama, was interested in all aspects of African culture, and a collector of books on the subject as well as recordings by Armstorn, Billy Holiday, Louis Jordan, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford and Bessie Smith.
Randy was already active politically, and close to Max Roach in this area, and in 1955 he dedicated his composition "Zulu" to Africa, with whose problems he was especially concerned.
During his stay, Randy became familiar with the music of the region, and took a special interest in the music of the Gnaouas, whose ancestors were slaves from the coast of West Africa.

Bobby Benson’s "Niger Mambo" has both dancelike poppiness and concert-jazz gravity, and the orchestral breadth of Weston’s own "In Memory Of" puts him in the realm of Ellington and Mingus, especially in the Duke-like assuredness of his own piano playing.
