A family of Anglo-Irish peers held the title of Lord Ranelagh and their London estates were in the Putney and Fulham areas.
Ranelagh Harriers was founded in 1881, and so is one of the oldest athletics clubs in the country.
The end of hostilities brought a period of struggle for survival for Ranelagh, but by the mid-1950s things were on the upturn again, and the club started to look at improving its accomodation at the Dysart.

Ranelagh House was demolished in 1805 (Colvin 1995, p 561).
The centrepiece of Ranelagh was a rococo rotunda with a diameter of 120 feet (37 metres) which was designed by William Jones, a surveyor to the East India Company.
Ranelagh Gardens were re-designed by John Gibson in the nineteenth century and is now a green pleasure ground with shaded walks, part of the grounds of Chelsea Hospital and the site of the annual Chelsea Flower Show.

A suspect package delivered to the south Dublin constituency office of the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, was declared safe earlier today.
An explosive ordinance vehicle and armed soldiers attended the scene in Ranelagh village at lunchtime.
The army said it had been alerted by gardaí that a suspect package had been delivered in the post to the minister's office.
