It is bounded by the Tripura state of India on the north, Bandarban District on the south, Mizoram State of India and Chin State of Myanmar on the east, and Khagrachhari and Chittagong Districts on the west.
The district of Rangamati consists of 10 upazilas, 1 municipality, 9 wards, 35 mahallas, 50 union parishads, 162 mouzas and 1347 villages.
The upazilas are Baghaichhari, Barkal, Kawkhali, Belaichhari, Kaptai, Juraichhari, Langadu, Nannerchar, Rajasthali and Rangamati sadar.

On April 12, 1998 the 4 (four) bills - Rangamati Hill District Local Government Council (amendment) Bill, 1998; Khagrachari Hill District Local Government Council (amendment) Bill, 1998; Bandarban hill District Local Government Council (amendment) Bill, 1 998 and the CHT Regional Council Bil1, 1998 were introduced in the parliament.

Bideshi Chakma, a 10-year-old boy from Gangatyatali village, Rangamati district, detained by the commander of Khiram army camp of the 17 EBR in the Ghagra military zone.
Puspa Chakma alias Hat Bhanga, of Suknachari village in Rangamati district, was arrested and severely beaten at the Tanhgum bazaar on by an officer of the 17 EBR, commander of the army camp at Tanhgum.
Seventy Jumma people were arrested by the army in Rangamati, including many civilian leaders and Kalpa Ranjan Chakma, a prominent member of the Awami League Party; they were only released after a long period of detention and many of them had been beaten while in custody.

I arrived in Comilla and found that Lieutenant Colonel Shams-ul-Haq had gone to Rangamati and Chittagong on his farewell round and left word for me to join him in Chittagong at the address where he was staying and I was to stay also.
Later I learnt that Captain Khokhar was in Rangamati with the frogman detachment, the detachment was in a government rest house whose grounds were overlooked by a road, they were doing some training and these two men stood and watched, the frogmen noticed them and apprehended them as spies.
The chowkidar of the rest house had witnessed the whole proceeding, he reported the affair to the District Commissioner Rangamati who sent a report to the government authorities.
