 Variant Character Classes :: d20srd.org
In cases where a single class offers a variety of paths (such as the totem barbarian or the monk fighting styles), the easiest solution is simply to bar multiclassing between different versions of the same class (just as a character can't multiclass between different versions of specialist wizards).
A planar ranger's spellcasting ability is largely unchanged from that of the standard ranger, with one exception: Any ranger spell that normally affects animals also affects celestial or fiendish versions of animals when cast by a planar ranger.
These spells are treated as being on the character's class spell list (and thus she can use wands or arcane scrolls that hold those spells, or even prepare those spells in her normal wizard spell slots).

 Character class - Vanguard Wiki
Up until level 10 a player is free to experiment with different classes (in accordance with race restrictions at the starting area).
Classes are derived from core jobs, but they don't branch.
Each class can perform as well as the other at their core job in the vast majority of cases so we avoid the specialist vs. generalist problem, but outside of that they are specifically being designed to feel and play differently.

The undead hunter is a multi-class character consisting of the cleric and ranger classes.
It is a sort of a ‘prestige class lite’ in that it specializes in certain areas of the parent classes’ skill sets without the special powers that prestige classes get.
Many of the ranger skills are not that necessary for undead hunters as you usually won’t be in the normal scouting role that rangers often fill.

Untill the characters posess magic and equipment that makes them immune to weather and starvation and keeps them from becoming lost as children in a shoping mall, the ranger is as vital to the party as the fighter who makes julienne fries out of ogres or the fire slinging mage.
Otherwise you would have to figure out how a ranger got a sword, where and how they got training on how to use it, and why they carry around this bulky, heavy thing around all the time when they rarely use it in the course of their day to day existance.

Guild Wars - best all around character class for solo?
Some of the techniques that were good for low level characters aren't as good at the higher level.
The character, while cool in film and books, especially LORD OF THE RINGS, in gaming seemed like a weaker warrior, and dependent on being outside in nature, and in Guild Wars you aren't always in the forest or have handy animals around.
Also, while all combinations of classes can effectively solo (with henches), being part monk, primary or secondary, is a huge, massive, *enormous*, advantage, and the advantage gets bigger the later in the game you get.

roleplaying tips for roleplayers and gamemaster roleplaying advice for all roleplaying systems and rpgs
Anytime there is a task that the character is intended to eventually perform, or a role that they need to play in order for the campaign to reach its epic conclusion, the referee needs to write it down in their file and then tick off these tasks as they are achieved.
Scenario 3b would assume that the characters started at 12th level (from 2b) and emerge at 12+4+2=18th level (the +4 is the 4 levels they are expected to get, the +2 is the two extra that comes from a 'b' assumption).
If your character is a giant ball of problems, it might take the emphasis away from the group a little too much or the DM might not be quite sure where to start.

In addition to using any weapons and armor (although initially limited to those available in the viking milieu), they carve mystic "runes" which perform magic abilities, and are regarded a sub-class of the cleric.
The specific means of activating the rune is not always defined, and in such cases the referee may either define it in a way consistent with the character and the rune or allow that the character knows how to do it and may do so freely at will.
However, once introduced to a rune, the character will have to make a check identical to the chance to know each listed spell for magic users to determine whether he understands it.
