Ranger 7 was designed to achieve a lunar impact trajectory and to transmit high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface during the final minutes of flight.
Ranger 7 was the first U.S. spacecraft to successfully transmit images of the lunar surface back to Earth.
This Ranger 7 (camera-B) image was taken 5 seconds before impact on 31 July 1964 from a distance of 14.71 km and shows the floor of Mare Nubium.

The Ranger probes were designed to return data en route to the Moon and then crash into the lunar surface sending back images from an altitude of about 1,300 km up to the point of impact.
Rangers 3, 4, and 5 carried a capsule, containing a seismometer, which was intended to be jettisoned and then decelerated by retrorocket in order to make a rough but survivable landing.
The final three flights of the series, Ranger 7, Ranger 8, and Ranger 9, were a complete success, returning a total of more than 17,000 photos with a resolution of 0.25-1.5 meters.

Ranger 1, a test version of the spacecraft which would attempt an unmanned crash landing on the moon, was launched from the Atlantic Missile Range by an Atlas-Agena B booster.
Ranger 1's primary mission was to test the performance of those functions and parts that are necessary for carrying out subsequent lunar and planetary missions using essentially the same spacecraft design.
Ranger IV was launched by an Atlas-Agena B booster from the Atlantic Missile Range, attained a parking orbit, and was fired into the proper lunar trajectory by the restart of the Agena B engine.

RANGER 3, launched on January 26, 1962, was intended to land an instrument capsule on the surface of the Moon, but problems during the launch caused the probe to miss the Moon and head into solar orbit.
RANGER 3 did try to take some images of the Moon as it flew by, but the camera was unfortunately aimed at deep space during the attempt.
RANGER 6 through 9 had more modified lunar missions: They were to send back live images of the lunar surface as they headed towards an impact with the Moon.
