Consequently, many Korean War Ranger veterans purchased copies of the Second World War Ranger Infantry Battalion scrolls, removed the letters BN, then sewed in white thread the letters CO. It was this modified scroll that many of the early Ranger School graduates wore on their uniforms.
The Ranger Training Command at Fort Benning, Georgia, evaluated and endorsed the fl beret for Ranger use but its official authorization in accordance with regulations by the Department of the Army would not be forthcoming for more than another two decades.

So, we are a microcosm in Ranger History, however, it was the work turned in by the 75th Ranger Infantry Vietnam that prompted and old LEG Tanker warrior General Creighton Abrams to form the 1st Ranger Battalion during January 1974 while I was the Sergeant Major for the Army Ranger School.
Earlier Rangers had a history of drunken brawling that is unmatched except amongst Paratroopers and some Navy/Marine Special Operations types, and Abrams wasn't going to have that.

Obtaining a Ranger Tab identifies an individual as being Ranger qualified, and not as a Ranger.
Those that pass the course will have the honor of wearing the Ranger tab and can take pride in the fact that they have actually earned something.

The 1st Ranger Infantry Company (Abn) comprised part of the 1st cycle of the newly formed Ranger Training Command in Sept. 1950, at Ft. Benning, Ga. Volunteers were recruited from U.S. Army Airborne divisions and required to be parachute qualified, thus giving Ranger units an added new dimension.
They were also the first 'Airborne Rangers' in Ranger history to be committed to combat.

I thought that if you complete R.I.P. you were a ranger and once you complete ranger school you were promoted to a higher ranking ranger.
The Ranger tab only means that you have been through the leadership school called Ranger school, not assigned to a Ranger Batt.
There were very few with the "TAB" having the "TAB" are serving in a battalion does not make you a Ranger your actions do.
