Contaminated water shuts Rio uranium mine
The centre's researchers said the water was found to contain levels of uranium up to 400 times safe drinking levels, but Rio Tinto said it had been assured by health officials that the contamination posed no health risk to workers and that the water supply in the nearby town of Jabiru was not affected.
To extract uranium, ore is crushed and then pumped as a slurry to a thickener, where excess water is removed, before heading to leach tanks where sulphuric acid is added to dissolve uranium-bearing minerals.
Ammonia precipitates the uranium, which then passes to a furnace where ammonia is driven off, allowing uranium oxide to form.

The Mirarr Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the Ranger uranium mine welcome the decision by the Northern Territory Minister for Mines and Energy to refer the March 2004 Ranger process water contamination incident to the Department of Justice for likely prosecution.
The chief scientist closed the mine for a period, and there were worries that the creeks surrounding Jabiru may be contaminated by processed water from the mine which had been diverted incorrectly.
In March workers at the mine were showered and consumed water that was later found to be contaminated by the mine's processed water.

Uranium recovery has been about 71%, due to about half of the uranium being in the form of refractory brannerite, but an improved leach process was able to lift recovery to 82%.
While the grade of the uranium ore is lower than many mines or potential mines which have the benefit of open cut operation, the fact that copper is a co-product with uranium from that same ore (at 2.0% Cu in the proved and 2.1% Cu in the probable reserves) means that such grades are viable.

Ranger Uranium Mine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ranger uranium mine is located in Kakadu National Park, in the Northern Territory of Australia.
After years of saying 'No', Ranger was forced upon unwilling local Aboriginal people, who were under immense pressure from a conservative government that insisted on tying consent for the uranium mine to the establishment of the National Park, and the implementation of the NT Land Rights program.
The mine has had an appalling environmental and worker safety record, culminating in May 2005 in an historic conviction for breach of their environmental guidelines - the first such prosecution in the Northern Territory.

The Mirrar do not argue that mining alone is impacting on living tradition - the Mirrar argue that mining and its associated social, economic and political impacts are the single greatest impact and that an additional mine will push bininj culture past the point of cultural exhaustion to genocidal decay.

 Ranger-3 Uranium Mining Project
Ranger doesn't mention this anywhere in either its Company Profile nor in its annual reports, and seems not to have considered the issue even as a way to enhance its case for developing North Ranger-2 in preference to Orebody-3.
As the development of Orebody-3 was essentially covered in the Ranger inquiry, and as the current ERA plan to develop Orebody-3 is not radically different from that canvassed in the inquiry, a new environmental impact assessment won't be required as it would for the development of North Ranger-2.
Orebody-3 should be delayed until the Senate Select Committee on uranium mining has been allowed to assess it in the light of the data revealed by the formal environmental assessment for the Jabiluka proposal' Mr Hallam concluded.
