The town of Rangiora was founded on an area of land between the Waimakariri and Ashley Rivers in what is now mid to north Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand.
Rangiora was first settled by Europeans in the 1850's, when the native timber in the surrounding bush was sought for fuel and building purposes.

Three Rangiora based Department of Conservation firefighters were part of the 67-strong New Zealand contingent that joined their Australian counterparts last week to battle the on-going bushfires in Victoria.
The second deployment to Australia was made up of experienced firefighters from DOC, the rural fire districts and forestry, selected from throughout New Zealand.
The firefighters will be based north-west of Melbourne and plan to be back in Rangiora by early February.

A fire at a Canterbury plant this morning was a "dust explosion", a Fire Service spokesman said.
Fire Service command unit spokesman Michael Balmer said it was not yet known what caused the fire at Carter Holt Harvey Panels in Rangiora just after 8.30am.
Part of the wood panel processing involves woodchipping and grinding and creates lots of fine particles of dust which burn easily, he said.
