Lodge Rangitikei is the fourth oldest Lodge in the Ruapehu District, Lodge Tongariro No 705 (English Constitution.) having been formed in 1857, followed by St Andrew Kilwinning and United Manawatu, but Rangitikei was the first of these to join the New Zealand Constitution so it has the lowest Lodge Number in the District.
The Brethren who lived on the south side of the Rangitikei River however, had to wait until the next day as Scott’s Ferry, which was the only means of crossing the river safely, only operated during daylight hours.
The early history of Lodge Rangitikei is very closely allied to the history of the District but it is interesting to note that in the 1897 census there were only 61 males in the district.

 Flyfishing the Rangitikei
It is not uncommon to be fishing a small clear freestone river, meandering in a huge riverbed of stones and debris, and to notice driftwood perched 10 meters (30 feet) above you.
Rivers rising in the Kaimanawa's generally have a higher carrying capacity than rivers rising in the Ruahine Range, because the geology in the Kaimanawa Range is much more stable.
Because of the freestone river arena they are likely to be found in, a general lack of snags and other debris likely to entangle a flyline, it is best to let them run and follow them on foot if you can.

RESIDENTS of Rangitikei River border town Sanson are having to relearn the value of water.
And it is not just the present low flow in the Rangitikei River, the source of Sanson’s water, that has prompted the Manawatu District Council to embark on an “education” programme to help Sanson residents “appreciate the limitations of their scheme and what they are paying for”.
The council’s water manager, Wayne Spencer, said yesterday that while low flows in the river highlighted the vulnerability of the Sanson water scheme, it was a range of “other issues” that had led to the critical shortage of water.
