Wreck Bay and the adjacent coastline of Rangitoto is a graveyard for at least 13 ships that were dumped on the island between 1887 and 1947.

Rangitoto initially erupted in 15 to 20 metres of water and its basal portions are below sea level.
When the capping scoria cone was being formed, the column of magma which fed the eruptions probably rose high within the centre of the volcano, then, as activity died, withdrew back down the vent, resulting in minor subsidence of the scoria cone causing the moat which is a feature of the summit.

Not content with kayaking to Rangitoto and back in a day, I spent the weekend of 2-3 November sitting in a motley collection of sea kayaks with John, Thomas and Greg, floating around the waters of Auckland.
The trip was bittersweet: the islands of Rangitoto and Motutapu are quite stunning, and kayaking round them and spending a night on an island like Motutapu is pretty damn peaceful and enjoyable.
