Rank (botany) - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
In botanical nomenclature, a taxon is usually assigned to a rank in a hierarchy.
According to Art 3.1 of the ICBN the most important ranks of taxa are: kingdom, division or phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.
Taxa at the rank of genus and above get a botanical name in one part (unitary name); those at the rank of species and above (but below genus) get a botanical name in two parts (binary name); all taxa below the rank of species get a botanical name in three parts (ternary name).

A further step was taken by Rivinus and Pitton de Tournefort who made genus a distinct rank within taxonomic hierarchy and introduced the practice of naming the plants according to their genera.
The eight major ranks are given in bold; a selection of minor ranks are given as well.
In botany and mycology names at the rank of family and below are based on the name of a genus, sometimes called the type genus of that taxon, with a standard ending.

Military rank, or simply rank, is a system of grading seniority and command within military (The military forces of a nation) organizations.
A separate set of ranks was also used for secular, and occasionally ecclesiastic, rulers, as discussed in Ranks of nobility and peerage (additional info and facts about Ranks of nobility and peerage).
NCO ranks include a varying number of grades of Sergeant (Any of several noncommissioned officer ranks in the army or air force or marines ranking above a corporal) (Army, Air Force or Marines) or Petty officer (A noncommissioned officer in the navy with a rank comparable to sergeant in the army) (Naval).

If this variation is sufficient to warrant naming a new species, then a new species is named; but if the variation is minor or there is a broad range of overlap, a subspecies, variety, or form may be named.
When one of these ranks is recognized, its name is formed by using the species name followed by "subsp.," "var.," or "f.," an additional epithet, and the name of the author of the subspecies, variety, or form.
Which of these three ranks is used depends upon the type and magnitude of the differences between it and the other members of the species.

 Emily Gregory
She came to botany late, taking it as only a minor subject at Cornell (where she majored in literature) and graduating at the advanced age of 39 in 1881.
But botany became her life's work, and she pursued it, first, at Harvard, then at various German universities, and finally at the University of Zurich, one of the few institutions in the world willing to award the Ph.D. to women at that time.
Botany was then a very popular subject among young women; indeed, in 1890, forty percent of the members of the New York City Torrey Botanical Club were women, many of them well-to-do, who loved the field trips, socializing, and collecting that an interest in botany afforded.

About Heritage Ranks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The Global (G) Rank reflects the conservation status of a species from a global (i.e., range-wide) perspective, characterizing the relative rarity or imperilment of the species.
Global conservation status ranks are based primarily on three factors: number of occurrences; total overall abundance of the element; and overall size of the geographic range.
Heritage ranks are independent of Federal and State status designations and, as such, they carry no formal role in protecting species.

State Rank Values   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The State Rank reflects the conservation status of a species from a local perspective, characterizing the relative rarity or imperilment of the species within the state of New Mexico.
The status of an element is indicated on a scale of one to five; the score is based on the estimated number of extant occurrences of the element and other factors such as trends, threats and abundance.
For example, the state rank of a critically imperiled subspecies of an otherwise widespread and common species would be S5T1.

Augustus Quirinus Rivinus (1652–1723), in his classification of plants based on the characters of the flower, introduced the category of order (corresponding to the "higher" genera of John Ray and Andrea Caesalpino).

The generic name Anthema has been applied to Lavatera arborea and cretica, but these two species do not appear to form a natural group.
