As of the 2000 census, the city's population was 184,256 and the Greater Jackson metropolitan area, including its suburbs in Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Copiah, and Simpson counties, had a population of 510,060; however, both population figures have likely increased with the influx of evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.
Jackson is one of the county seats of Hinds County; Raymond is the other county seat.
Mississippi became a territory of the United States in 1798, with Natchez at it's first capital.
