  Rankin Inlet, Nunavut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rankin Inlet (Inuktitut: Kangiqiniq ᑲᖏᕿᓂᖅ or Kangirliniq ᑲᖏᖅᖠᓂᖅ) is a town in Nunavut territory of Canada.
The town was founded by the owners of the Rankin Inlet Mine, which produced nickel and copper ores there between 1957 and 1962 from an underground operation.
The community is served by the Rankin Inlet Airport.

Rankin Inlet grew from a small exploration camp starting in 1951, when geologist started to restudy a nickel-copper deposit that was originally found in 1928.
After Northern Rankin Inlet Nickel Mines Ltd. closed and left, the town was still keep alive, as around this time the Federal Government was undertaking it's program of rehabilitation and re-location of many of the Inuit.
Today, Rankin Inlet is a main government community for the Kivalliq region and awaiting many other government departments from the newly created Nunavut Territory Government which will become operational on April 1, 1999.

A grizzly bear was shot and killed just outside of Rankin Inlet over the weekend after rummaging through several local cabins.
Numerous cabin owners in the area say the bear also visited their cabins, breaking windows and rooting around in cupboards for food.
The bear's hide is now at the Rankin Inlet hunters and trappers organization.

Here are the unofficial results of the 8 dog X-mas race sponsored by the Ranki Inlet Qimmuksiqtiit (dog mushers association).
It was -35 degrees Celsius, light wind, trail was from Rankin Inlet 1/3 over sea ice and 2/3 over the land, return to Rankin, about 25 miles total, kinda soft and rough trail, about 1 mile visibility at 1 p.m and by 2 p.m it was less than 1/4 mile visibility.
There was a husky class for this race also, and Jack Kabvitok won the husky class.

This film highlighted the grassroots project initiated in the North West Territory Community of Rankin Inlet, by the Leo Ussak Elementary School which developed into the Rankin Inlet Community Access Centre with multi-media and internet facilities for this remote, Inuit community in Canada's North West Territories.
Four, grade six students from the Leo Ussak Elementary School in Rankin Inlet, were on-hand with their teacher Bill Belsey to answer questions from the audience regarding the Rankin Inlet Community Access Centre Project.
