Rankin Inlet grew from a small exploration camp starting in 1951, when geologist started to restudy a nickel-copper deposit that was originally found in 1928.
After Northern Rankin Inlet Nickel Mines Ltd. closed and left, the town was still keep alive, as around this time the Federal Government was undertaking it's program of rehabilitation and re-location of many of the Inuit.
Today, Rankin Inlet is a main government community for the Kivalliq region and awaiting many other government departments from the newly created Nunavut Territory Government which will become operational on April 1, 1999.

In January 1993, with territorial government support, initial work was done by the Matchbox Gallery in Rankin Inlet to determine if a ceramics project would again be viable.
Rankin Inlet Ceramics is made possible with a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, the generous sponsorship of Friesens, and support from First Air.

Acid-generating sulphidic tailings from a Ni-Cu mine were exposed on the shores of Hudson Bay for 30 years before burial in a drained bedrock basin.
Results of the column experiments indicate that significant oxidation of the Rankin Inlet tailings occurs at 30°C but at lower temperatures this rate is substantially reduced.
Thermal modeling and direct measurements have shown that the freezing of the tailings in Rankin Inlet is progressing.

An excellent article on the minerals of the Nanisivik Mine was published in the Mineralogical Record in 1990 (see below) and provides an in depth look at the mine, geology, and specimens from this locality.
The Polaris Mine is an underground zinc-lead mine, which is operated by Cominco Ltd. The mine is owned by Cominco (77.5%) and Rio Algom (25%).
Near Rankin Inlet, nickel and pentlandite have been found in the waste piles of the old Rankin Inlet Mine.
