Thanagar, the world to which the Hawks have technological and spiritual connections, has been destroyed, and its populace has relocated on the planet Rann, Strange's adopted home.
The gritty quality of their collaboration suits the war elements of the book nicely, as well as the raw, primitive side of Hawkman.
I'm also pleased to see that there's a lot more to the brewing war than a conflict between the peoples of two worlds.

 TheFourthRail.com - Snap Judgments
Rann-Thanagar War is the follow-up to that story, and it has some of the same adventurous fun, and equally great art thanks to Reis and Campos, but Gibbons's plot is a little too convoluted, and his handle on some of the main heroes seems shaky, based on past continuity rather than current.
So far, it almost feels like Rann-Thanagar War is trying to be too much, not just a team-up story between some of DC's space-based heroes but a reshuffling of the entire alien and space subset of the DC Universe.
Given the tenuous connection that Carter Hall has to Thanagar, and the almost non-existent one that Kendra has, it seems strange that Adam expects them to be personally and deeply affected by these events.

Diggle and Ferry accomplished what had to be their primary goal, which was getting the more casual fan to care about Rann in general and Adam Strange and his family in particular.
The post-fight action was true to its pulp roots, right down to Adam's inability to hit a dame and Alanna's lack of such qualms after "her man" got dissed.

 Bags and Boards: Countdown Continues
Rounding out this first wave is Rann-Thanagar War, which does a slightly better job of setting up its premise for the reader.
This is a common problem that pops up whenever comics start to lean heavily on continuity, as writers, editors and artists often end up having so much plot to fit into specific issues that simple things such as introductions that help bring readers in become the first things to be cut for space.
This should be a fun action series, featuring a cool cast that includes Hawkman, Adam Strange and Green Lantern Kyle Rayner.
