	Dan Heller's Movie Review: Ransom
		The basic human theme of the movie is Mel Gibson's torment; the events that lead him to reason that negotiation with the kidnapper is futile are obvious, tho still well done.
		But, I feel it's wrong to say that Ransom is a good movie simply because it isn't a bad movie, but that's how I seem to be rating movies this year.
		(How awful!) I guess my basic feeling is, Ransom is a reasonable action/suspect/drama movie that could have (should have) been done by Jan De Bont using lesser known actors who need to get out and show their stuff, and using a much smaller budget.

		RANSOM is director Ron Howard's first venture into the action thriller genre, and, although he's working with a solid cast and an auspicious premise, his attempts to emulate suspense maestro Alfred Hitchcock fall short.
		The script, which is based on a 1956 movie of the same name, has been re-worked by novelist Richard Price (CLOCKERS) to bring it up to date.
		Since there's no way Sean is going to be killed (or a Disney-owned company never would have released the movie), the most compelling questions relate to how he will be recovered and whether anyone will die attempting to save him.

		As is, "King's Ransom" is unobtrusive and virtually painless as an occasionally witty laugher, but lacks the courage of its convictions—and a much-needed R-rating—to follow through with its less commercial ambitions.
		The core idea of a wide array of people unknowingly planning to kidnap and hold for ransom a CEO all at the same time is an admittedly fresh one, but the film disappointingly discards it by the halfway point and the proceedings dissolve into a more banal hostage picture that simply spins its wheels.
		It deserves to be mentioned, however, that "King's Ransom" ends with perhaps the most cynical, strange postscript ever to be found on a studio comedy: "They divorced six months later." In a motion picture lacking much boldness, this divergence from the norm is, at least, worth a little something.
