Hausmann said that the average German "has no more capabilities than those which chance has glued on the outside of his skull; his brain remains empty".
Hausmann's sculpture might be seen as an aggressively Marxist reversal of Hegel: this is a head whose "thoughts" are materially determined by objects literally fixed to it.
Hausmann turns inside out the notion of the head as seat of reason, an assumption that lies behind the European fascination with the portrait.

Born in Vienna, Austria, Raoul Hausmann was a founder member of the Berlin Dada movement in 1917, along with Richard Huelsenbeck, George Grosz, Johannes Baader and John Heartfield.
Hausmann claimed to have discovered the technique of photomontage while on holiday in the Baltic in 1918, although, as with the name Dada itself, this paternity is disputed.
Hausmann also linked his montage and verse in "optophonetic" poster poems, using woodblock letters printed on large sheets of wrapping paper and intended to be pasted onto walls across Berlin.

The Czech-born "Dadasoph", Raoul Hausmann was a founding member of Berlin Dada, and one of its driving forces.
As was typical of a man of such versatility, allied with a monstrous ego, Hausmann claimed to have invented photomontage.
Hausmann's montages were some of the most artistic of the early period of Dada, demonstrating his somewhat wild and free personality in their lack of inhibition.

 Raoul Hausmann, 1886 - 1971 Biography
As a young man, Raoul was interested in the goals set by Expressionism, then just emerging in Germany, and was a committed staff member of the magazine 'Der Sturm'.
Hausmann developed a photomontage process and published his first 'poster poems' and phonetic poems.
The documentary photos and phototechnical experiments he produced during this period would be the only artistic activity in which Hausmann would be able to indulge without restriction for quite some time to come because, as a proscribed artist, he was always threatened with persecution until 1944.

 Raoul Hausmann
Raoul Hausmann, born in 1886 in Vienna (Austria), lived in Berlin beginning in 1900, and deceased in Limoges (France) in 1971, is counted among the most important artists of the historical avant-garde of the 20th century.
The process of the photomontage, of which Hausmann could be considered the father, was also to be taken up by Hanna Höch, Johannes Baader, John Heartfield, and Georges Grosz.
Ye tfor Hausmann, Dada had implications well beyond the realm of the artistic, and one can see that he was more attracted to the anarchist Baader and the militant communists Grosz and Heartfield than to Tristan Tzara.

Artist: Raoul Hausmann (1886-1971) was a leader of Berlin Dada, along with George Grosz, John Heartfield, Hannah Höch - Hausmann's lover from 1915 to 1922 - and Richard Huelsenbeck.
Dead of eye and moronic of mouth, the head is given identity only by the objects stuck to it: a tape measure, a wooden ruler, a tin cup, a spectacles case and a piece of metal, which could be a plate plugging the damaged skull of a soldier.
Yet Hausmann's pitiable, mutant sculpture, in its summing-up of the death of an entire notion of self, has a tragic poetry that makes it exactly what the Dadaists repudiated: a timeless masterpiece saying something fundamental about the human condition.

Most of the letters are from Hausmann and record the exiled author's successful attempts first to secure his material existence in post-war France and then to re-establish contact with avantgarde artists, publishers and art dealers.
They tacitly document the recognition Hausmann received during the latter half of his life, and that which was accorded Dada through Hausmann's vigilance.
The letters also comment critically on a broad array of political events, including the Cold War, the Indochina conflict, 1968 student demonstrations, labor strikes, and deaths of leading political figures, though Hausmann was apparently reticent to commit to any ideological position or direct engagement with political groups.
