File No. 113 -- Chapter 24   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
As Raoul was walking out to Vésinet about midnight, he was stopped at a lonely spot, by three men, who asked him what o'clock it was; while looking at his watch, the ruffians fell upon him suddenly, and but for Raoul's wonderful strength and agility, would have left him dead on the spot.
Raoul rushed toward the man to chastise him on the spot; but his friends held him back, telling him that it would be much more gentlemanly to run a sword through his vulgar hide, than have a scuffle in a public place.
Raoul had seen enough of the world to know that these heroes who cover their visiting-cards with titles have very little glory elsewhere than in their own conceit.

On the whole, as one historian notes, “the war's effect on France's social and economic structure was to shake it up without producing really revolutionary or fundamental changes … on the one hand, an increased stability approaching stagnation; on the other hand, a growth in stresses and tensions within this rigidified social and economic structure.”
The end of the war brought various social concerns to the fore as railway and other transport workers went on strike (Jan.) and the acquittal of Raoul Villain, the man who assassinated Jean Jaurès (Aug. 1914), sparked massive demonstrations (March).
The government responded with the long-awaited law making the eight-hour workday obligatory (April 23), but worker dissatisfaction continued to manifest itself in strikes through May and June.

 The Phantom of the Opera
The battle between Raoul and the Phantom for Christine's love brings the story to its inevitable climax.
Panaro's Phantom, small and self-conscious whenever he approaches another actual human being, is a scary, demented guy: the menace of his character comes not from a broken heart but an irredeemably warped soul.
This shifts the dynamic in the show, giving Christine and her lover/protector Raoul a more palpable villain to react to, and also making the whole of the second act—in which the Phantom tries to capture Christine and is hunted down by Raoul—more exciting than I've ever seen it.
