Rapateaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rapateaceae is the botanical name for a family of flowering plants.
The Cronquist system, of 1981, also recognized this family and placed it in the order Commelinales in the subclass Commelinidae in class Liliopsida [=monocotyledons] in division Magnoliophyta [=angiosperms].

Rapateaceae and Bromeliaceae are closely related families of commelinid monocots, each with a center of diversity in South America, and each with one species in West Africa.
In Rapateaceae, monotypic Maschalocephalus is endemic to a sandstone area that abutted the South American Guayana Shield before the Atlantic rifted.
In Bromeliaceae, Pitcairnia feliciana occurs on Bioko, and is large genus ranging throughout Central and South America.

 Bromeliflorae
The Bromeliflorae, as here treated, are a group of monocots comprising two families: the Bromeliaceae with 45 genera and about 2000 species, and the Rapateaceae with 16 genera and 80-100 species.
Both the Rapateaceae and Bromeliaceae are perennial herbs native entirely to the New World, but each with a single species in West Africa (Maschalocephalus sp.
The Rapateaceae have often been considered close relatives of the Commeliniflorae, based on what are likely plesiomorphic characters shared between the groups.

Rapateaceae (16 genera, ∼ 100 species) is largely restricted to the tepuis and sandplains of the Guayana Shield in northern South America, with Maschalocephalus endemic to West Africa.

Spathanthus is sister to all other genera of Rapateaceae, with the tribes Rapateae and Monotremae representing successively divergent lineages within Rapateoideae.
Saxofridericia/Stegolepis/ Epidryos/Marahuacaea, which have yellow, cup-shaped flowers and bee pollination, are sister to the tribe Schoenocephalieae, which have reddish, tubular flowers, the only nectaries in the family, and hummingbird pollination.
Branch lengths are consistent with the operation of a molecular clock; Maschalocephalus is only slightly divergent from other Monotremae, suggesting that it is the product of a relatively recent, long-distance dispersal event, NOT continental drift.

Thorne (1999) accept the Commelinales and the Cannales (in this case used in the same sense as the name Zingberales is used by others), followed by the Bromeliales.
The Rapateaceae (16 genera, 80 species) are found primarily in South America with a single genus and species in tropical West Africa (Maschalocephalus).
Reveal refers the Rapateaceae, Xyridaceae and Mayacaceae to the Xyridales; Takhtajan places each family in their own order, although the "Rapateales" has yet to be validly published (see Reveal & Doweld in a forthcoming paper in Novon).

The Pantepui Province is probably one of the main centres of endemism of the neotropics; compared to its small overall surface, it probably contains the highest number of endemic taxa per unit area.
Known endemics thus far include one fern family (Hymenophyllopsidaceae), one flowering plant family (Saccifoliaceae) and 39 summit genera, of which the most important are found in Theaceae, Rapateaceae, Ericaceae, Compositae, Bromeliaceae, Rubiaceae and Melastomataceae (Steyermark 1986).
Some parts of the Pantepui Province have a greater concentration of endemic taxa than others: Cerro de la Neblina in the extreme south is likely to hold the most endemic genera, followed by the Chimantá massif and Duida-Marahuaca.

Recent analyses of ndhF and rbcL sequence data allied Mayaca to Bromeliaceae and Rapateaceae; the latter also have poricidal anther dehiscence.
In our on-going analysis of rbcL, atpA, and cob sequence data representing all orders of monocots, Mayaca has been placed in a variety of positions, appearing either as sister to Eriocaulaceae or to Xyridaceae.
These alternative hypotheses will be evaluated with respect to morphological data.
