The authenticity of these facts is doubtful, although it is possible that Raphael was the Holinshed who matriculated from Christs College, Cambridge, in 1544.
Wolfe was already engaged in the preparation of a universal history, and Holinshed worked for some years on this undertaking; but after Wolfes death in 1573 the scope of the work was abridged, and it appeared in 5578 as the Chronicles of En gland, Scotland, and Ireland.
A second edition of the Chronicles, enlarged and improved but without illtistrations, which appeared in 1587, contained statements which were offensive to Queen Elizabeth and her advisers, and immediately after publication some of the pages were excised by order of the privy council.

Raphael Holinshed and his predecessor historians supply the basic historical data for the story of Macbeth, and Shakespeare's modifications to that story can tell actors and directors a great deal about his possible intentions on the way the tale should be played.

Raphael Holinshed (died ~1580) was an English chronicler, whose work was one of the major sources used by William Shakespeare for his "history" plays.
His great work, entitled The Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland, was published by Wolfe in 1577; in fact, several writers apart from Holinshed himself were involved in its production, including William Harrison, Richard Stanyhurst[?] and John Hooker[?].

Though the work is known as Holinshed's Chronicles, even in its first edition it was the product of a conglomeration of Elizabethan middle class, university educated (with the exception of John Stow, the son of a tallow-chandler and an autodidact) gentlemen scholars.
Holinshed may have conceived of a compendious history of the three kingdoms beginning with Noah, but he realised he could not undertake the task alone.
In 1587 a second edition of Holinshed's Chronicles appeared "newlie augmented and continued (with manifold matters of singular note and worthie memorie) to the year 1586" and it is this edition which is held in the Foyle Special Collections Library.
