Raphidioptera, or snake-flies are distributed over most of Europe and Asia where trees prevail, as well as western North America and Nearctic parts of Mexico.
Adults are very distinctive, with an elongate pronotum, reminding some people of a certain snake-like quality.
The two families can be rather easily separated: Inocellidae have much longer, thicker antennae; the pterostigma is much darker and more pronounced; and ocelli are absent.

Basic information on the systematics and distribution of the order Raphidioptera is provided, followed by details of the biology of snakeflies with respect to habitats, substrates upon which they develop, food of adults, food of larvae, life cycles, prothetely, mating and oviposition, parasites and parasitoids, hyperparasites, possible economic importance, and rearing methods.
The comparatively complete segment 9 of Raphidioptera consists of tergite, sternite, large gonocoxites, styli and gonapophyses; it serves as a reference model for our understanding of segment 10 and 11 in Raphidioptera and of male genital sclerites in Megaloptera and Neuroptera.
About 49 taxa of Megaloptera, Raphidioptera, and Neuroptera were detected within the Park and in the surrounding areas, although the identity of 13 of these requires confirmation.

Neuroptera, along with the smaller orders, Raphidioptera and Megaloptera, are among the oldest Holometabola, many exhibiting a variety of primitive characteristics (Hennig 1981, New 1989, Kristensen 1999).
This was questioned by Boudreaux (1979), who instead suggested that Raphidioptera were sister to Megaloptera+ Neuroptera; a view recently supported in a cladistic analysis of morphological characters by Aspöck et al.

Snakefly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Snakeflies are a group of insects in the order Raphidioptera, which has traditionally been placed within the Neuroptera but is now generally regarded as a separate order (the traditional definition of Neuroptera included the Raphidioptera and Megaloptera; sometimes the name Neuropterida is used to refer to these three orders as a group).
Raphidioptera are characterized by having an elongate prothorax but no modification of the forelegs (as in Mantispidae).
They are all predatory, both as adults and larvae, and in North America occur exclusively in the Western United States, but also occur throughout temperate Europe and Asia.

Phylogenetic trees were generated by parsimony analysis, and clade robustness was evaluated by branch length, Bremer support, percentage of extra steps required to force paraphyly, and sensitivity analysis using the following parameters: gap weights, morphological character weights, methods of data set combination, removal of key taxa, and alignment region.
Mecoptera may be paraphyletic because Boreus is often placed as sister group to the fleas; hence, Siphonaptera may be subordinate within Mecoptera.
The 18S sequences for Priacma (Coleoptera: Archostemata), Colpocaccus (Coleoptera: Adephaga), Agulla (Raphidioptera), and Corydalus (Megaloptera) are nearly identical, and Neuropterida are monophyletic only when those two beetle sequences are removed from the analysis.

There really is no right or wrong notion here, but the International Association of Neuropterology prefers the use of Neuropterida as the senior taxonomic group, including the Orders Megaloptera, Raphidioptera and Neuroptera, accepting that Planipennia is an out moded name.
Other points of view also prevail - look for example at the first two web sites listed below.
