		En la memoria de Raphy Leavitt aún persiste el retrato de la gente de su barrio pobre de Puerta de Tierra, junto a la que conoció la pobreza, la marginación social y el fango.
		A los tres años de edad, Raphy Leavitt perdió a su madre y cuando era apenas un adolescente su padre murió, por lo que se crió con sus tías Jessie y Roselín Leavitt.
		Leavitt luego cambio de empresa disquera; escogiendo a TH Records, con quien lanzó tres álbumes entre 1981 y 1983.

		Desde 1966, Raphy Leavitt había asumido el rol de director al formar su propia agrupación musical, Los Señoriales, la que luego llamó La Banda Latina, dedicándose a interpretar canciones tradicionales de la música popular y uno que otro éxito de las orquestas salseras que se habían puesto de moda.
		En sus comienzos, La Selecta estuvo integrada por diez jóvenes puertorriqueños, a saber: Raphy Leavitt (fundador, director, compositor, pianista y arreglista), Sammy Marrero (cantante), Luisito Maisonet (trompetista), Richard López y Franky León (trombonistas), Jimmy Sánchez (bajista), Nelson Ramos (timbalero), William “Kidland” Marcano (conguero), Felipe “Felo” Román (bongosero), y Carlos “Cao” Sánchez (“bandboy”).
		Raphy Leavitt estuvo al borde de la muerte al sufrir una contusión cerebral que lo mantuvo semi-inconsciente por cuatro meses y una fractura masiva en su cadera que requirió seis meses de hospitalización.

		Salsa bandleader, pianist, composer, arranger, and producer Raphy Leavitt was born 17 September 1948, in the Puerta De Tierra section of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
		It was a bolero montuno in which Leavitt utilized “soneos”, or improvisations, in the form of decimas as is typically done in Puerto Rican folk music.
		Leavitt then changed recording companies; switching to TH Records, with which he released three albums between 1981 and 1983.
